Job Overview
Maintain boiler systems, oversee maintenance, enforce safety protocols, and adjust controls. Responsibilities may include performing routine maintenance on boilers and associated equipment, piping systems and burners. Other duties include keeping service and repair logs, communicating with customers or organizations, performing preventative maintenance checks on equipment, and promoting efficiency. Utilizing mechanical skills and systems knowledge to keep boilers functioning properly and ensure the safety of NAS Fallon customers. This is an advanced semi-skilled position. Employees are required to complete all Mechanic 1, 2 and 3 requirements for a total of forty-eight (48) months of service and six hundred (600) successful hours of trade-related vocational instruction or 8,000 hours of documented experience. An employee who fails to complete the required hours for training/coursework will be subject to discipline procedures. Employees who attain established levels of proficiency and qualifications are eligible to move to the next mechanic level.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
- Perform a variety of tasks on both the interior and exterior of buildings, installing, repairing, and maintaining commercial gas and oil heating systems and associated equipment in accordance with mechanical, plumbing, EPA, and electrical code guidelines.
- Perform work required for the maintenance and operation of a boiler plant including, but not limited to, the maintenance and operation of the following types of equipment: Sieman Apogee Energy Management System (EMS), compressors and pneumatic control systems, high pressure boilers and hydraulic pumps.
- Troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, maintain, or modify heating systems and equipment including, but not limited to, valves, gas pressure and air flow switches, thermostats, filters, nozzles, burner units, air-compressors, pumps, 3-phase electric motors, breaker switches, piping, tubing and related gas pressure and hot water systems and electrical, mechanical, and electronic control panels.
- Open and clean boilers as directed.
- Monitor and check contracted repairs to ensure all repairs to boilers are completed properly.
- Maintain and create record(s) and report(s) of work accomplished and materials used.
- Must recognize and determine the correct method for correcting malfunctions on boiler systems and appurtenances.
- Perform visual, audible and mechanical checks.
- Check gauges, recording devices and controllers.
- Must understand the principles of steam and generating processes.
- Must be familiar with burner controls and its operations on both oil and gas configurations.
- Respond to emergency call outs as requested.
- Follow work assignments, instructions, labeled information and safety standards independently. Interpret gauges, charts, keep complete records, use and interpret various testing devices related to boiler operation.
- Perform responsibilities and heavy manual labor for extended periods of time (8-12 hours a day) even during Operate and maintain high and low-pressure boilers.
- Perform compression and safety tests.
- Take and monitor water sampling and treatment.
- Perform preventative maintenance.
- Perform minor pipe repairs.
- Replace worn parts, including valves and filters.
- Follow instructions from boiler engineers and/or other staff, perform self-study, attend training opportunities as available.
- Demonstrated literacy on computer equipment. Microsoft software and demonstrate the use of Word, Excel, or any other software programs. The use of email is expected.
- Willingness to receive instruction from boiler engineers and other staff, perform self-study, attend training opportunities as available.
- Assists in performing HAZMAT/safety inspections; maintenance of logs, records, and signing of fire extinguisher tags.
- Perform all other work-related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- All required Boiler Tech 1, 2 and 3 requirements plus all the following required courses and/or in-house training programs: Instrumentation and Controls.
- Capable of obtaining and maintaining Base access through CAC Card and/or DBIDS credential with favorable background adjudication as required.
- Possess an OSHA 10 card or have the ability to get one within the first 90 days of employment.
- Demonstrate willingness to invest in the proper tools used in the service of Boiler equipment.
- Demonstrate willingness to invest time in service training seminars and related classes.
- Ability to safely install/repair gas lines, fittings.
- Ability to safely and responsibly install and/or repair refrigerant lines.
- Demonstrated literacy using Microsoft Office programs, i.e., use of Word, Excel, and Outlook and any database programs.
- Possess a valid Nevada State issued Real ID Driver's License or capable of obtaining Nevada State issued Real ID.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
- Demonstrate commitment to developing customer service skills.
- Demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
- Must be able to comprehend, read, speak, and write proficiently in the English language.
Preferred:
- Welding and Pipe Fitting experience.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work is subject to extreme temperature and inclement weather conditions.
- Capable of safely working with heights and in confined working conditions from extension ladder or step ladder.
- Safely and securely ascend and descend on ladders, scaffolds, walkways and around equipment at various heights.
- Subject to hazards that may cause personal bodily harm; diseases, cuts, bruises, burns, common colds, influenza, dust odors, and elevated noise levels
- Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hand and soft-carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces, and working in various heights and confined spaces.
- Capable of performing shift work and overtime as needed and assigned rotating on-call/stand-by duty.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to use safe lifting procedures; capable of lifting and/or moving up to 70 lbs.
- Ability to use full range of body motion: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, bending, reaching, and twisting.
- Perform responsibilities and heavy manual labor for extended periods of time (8-12 hours a day).
