The Utilities & Central Energy (UCE) group specializes in large central plant work, particularly for district energy serving cities, universities, hospitals, and manufacturing campuses. POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Mechanical Engineer III plays a key role in the successful execution of projects. This individual will provide technical and engineering excellence, as well as successful delivery of work to our customers. The Mechanical Engineer III is responsible for a high level of customer satisfaction by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and managed - both externally and internally. The successful candidate will also contribute to a dynamic team environment by being proactive, communicating clearly and frequently, and modeling a highly collaborative working environment. This person will also actively support the business development process through the writing of proposals and meeting with prospective and current customers.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Lead the design of chilled water, heating hot water, steam, and hydronic utility systems for central plants and campus infrastructure projects, including engineering calculations, hydronic system sizing, equipment selection, and code-compliant design documentation.
- Develop and review engineering deliverables including P&IDs, piping system layouts, mechanical room layouts, technical reports, studies, specifications, and drawing submittals.
- Perform or coordinate pipe stress analysis and provide technical support for utility system design and implementation.
- Coordinate designs and drawings with architectural, structural, electrical, civil, and other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare equipment specifications and lead equipment selection, pre-purchase package development, procurement activities, and related vendor coordination.
- Develop estimates for assigned scope of work and contribute to project budgeting, forecasting, pricing, invoicing, and scope management activities.
- Support project planning, resource allocation, scheduling, and coordination efforts to ensure successful project execution.
- Provide technical and engineering support to other departments/disciplines and mentor junior engineers, designers, and interns.
- May manage assigned projects, driving them to completion.
- Support the business development process through proposal development and by meeting and presenting to prospective and current customers.
- May represent KFI at conferences, customer events, and through membership in industry associations.

QUALIFICATIONS Required
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar, related degree.
- Minimum of 7 years of Mechanical Engineering experience following graduation.
- Demonstrated proficiency designing utility generation and distribution systems, including chilled water, heating hot water, steam, and hydronic systems.
- Experience performing equipment selection and developing engineering deliverables, including P&IDs, mechanical room layouts, piping system designs, and hydronic system sizing calculations.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate engineering drawings and designs across multiple disciplines.
- Basic understanding of Architectural, Electrical, Civil, and Structural Engineering construction practices.
- Proficient in both AutoCAD and Revit.
- Expert knowledge of technology and the application of technology in business.
- Proven ability to build strong client relationships and establish credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to present complex information to diverse audiences, synthesize ideas into actionable recommendations, and positively influence outcomes.
- Strong planning, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification or willingness to pursue certification strongly preferred.
- Strong experience in infrastructure projects and/or plant operations.
- Experience with layout work, shop drawings, and generating technical reports.
- Experience performing pipe stress analysis using Caesar II and/or AutoPIPE.
- Demonstrated experience developing construction cost estimates, supporting project budgeting activities, and planning and coordinating work to meet project schedules.
- Effective meeting facilitation and management skills.
Working Conditions
