Software Engineer Intern

AVAILITY
United States
Aug 19, 2026

Availity delivers revenue cycle and related business solutions for health care professionals who want to build healthy, thriving organizations. Availity has the powerful tools, actionable insights and expansive network reach that medical businesses need to get an edge in an industry constantly redefined by change.

The Engineering function is responsible for all engineering activities within a firm to ensure that business objectives are met. Includes the creation, development, design and improvement of products, equipment, facilities, services, standards and procedures in all engineering fields.

We're building the next generation of a large-scale healthcare configuration platform - a ground-up modernization using cloud-native services, PostgreSQL, and AI-driven workflows. We're looking for a motivated engineering intern who wants to understand how complex systems work and help us make them better.

What you'll work on:

  • Help design and build agentic AI workflows that automate complex data management tasks

  • Convert existing UI-driven workflows into AI-powered, CLI-driven pipelines

  • Contribute to a multi-phase platform migration - replacing legacy services with modern APIs and intelligent tooling

  • Work with real production systems serving healthcare data to thousands of providers nationwide

Tech you'll use:

  • Java/Spring, Python, TypeScript

  • AI coding assistants and agentic development workflows

  • PostgreSQL, REST APIs, AWS (EKS, Aurora, S3)

  • Git, code review workflows, and automated testing

  • CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation

What we're looking for:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (graduating Dec 2026 - Dec 2027)

  • Experience with at least one of: Java, Python, or TypeScript

  • Genuine enthusiasm for building software - personal projects, side apps, open source contributions, or a GitHub/GitLab profile that shows you code because you love it

  • Hands-on exposure to AI/LLM tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) - we use AI daily and expect you to as well

  • Bonus: experience with agentic AI workflows, multi-step pipelines, or building tools that use LLMs programmatically

  • Interest in understanding how systems fit together - not just writing code, but thinking about why things are built the way they are

  • Strong ideas, loosely held - you form opinions, bring them to the table, and change direction without ego when the situation calls for it

  • Adaptable and comfortable with ambiguity - priorities shift, tools evolve, and the best approach today might not be the best approach next week. You roll with it.

  • Curiosity about how real-world systems work at scale

What we offer:

  • A team that ships AI-forward development practices - not just talking about AI, actually building with it

  • Mentorship from experienced engineers working on a high-visibility platform migration

  • Real, meaningful work - not busywork. Previous interns have shipped production features.

  • Flexible schedule (15-25 hours/week during semester)

  • Fully remote position (US-based)

  • Path to full-time hire for strong performers

Video Camera Usage:

Availity fosters a collaborative and open culture where communication and engagement are central to our success. As a remote first company, we are also camera-first and provide all associates with camera/video capability to simulate the office environment. If you are not able to use your camera for all virtual meetings, you should not apply for this role.

Having cameras on helps create a more connected, interactive, and productive environment, allowing teams to communicate more effectively and build stronger working relationships. The usage of cameras also enhances security and protects sensitive company information. Video participation is required to ensure that only authorized personnel are present in meetings and to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, preventing social engineering, or the sharing of confidential information with non-participants.
