THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports maintenance operations within an assigned area of Northumberland County, including planning, supervising crews, and coordinating daily activities. Your work will focus on managing resources, reviewing work needs, and supporting safe and efficient roadway upkeep. As an Assistant Highway Maintenance Manager, you will perform the following duties:


  • Work Planning: Develop programs, estimates, and plans for long range, annual, and short term maintenance activities
  • Crew Supervision: Oversee general and specialized crews performing highway and bridge maintenance and minor construction work
  • Agility Management: Develop, negotiate, and monitor agility agreements and meet with local partners to establish work priorities
  • Emergency Response: Manage incident and emergency activities for the assigned portion of the county
  • Work Inspection: Conduct or coordinate inspections of maintenance activities, contract work, and operational practices
  • Staff Leadership: Plan and evaluate work of subordinates, complete performance reviews, provide coaching and guidance, and participate in the hiring process

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Dual shifts are in effect from November through March.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $69,086.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Coordinator, Roadway Programs Coordinator, or Transportation Construction Manager 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Six years of technical experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, or maintenance of heavy equipment used in highway construction projects; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • All positions require possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
