Cal State Long Beach is seeking its next Risk Manager to lead the campus risk management function and a small, experienced team.
This is more than a technical risk role. Cal State Long Beach is looking for a leader who can assess risk thoughtfully, exercise sound judgment, and help campus partners find a path forward - not simply tell them what they can't do.
From major campus events and student travel to contracts, insurance, claims, and emerging risks, this role touches nearly every corner of the university. You'll partner across Legal, Procurement, IT, EHS, campus leadership, and the broader CSU system while helping build a more proactive, responsive, and customer-focused approach to risk management.
Strong risk expertise matters, but so do leadership, judgment, relationship-building, and the ability to make confident decisions when the answer isn't black and white.
Higher education experience isn't required. We welcome professionals from government, public sector, and other complex organizations who are ready to bring their experience to The Beach.

This role provides hybrid flexibility depending on operational needs. Here's a little about California State University, Long Beach: California State University, Long Beach is part of the 23-campus California State University system and serves a dynamic campus community in Southern California. Within the university, Risk Management partners across campus to help faculty, staff, students, and university leaders navigate risk thoughtfully while supporting the activities and initiatives that advance CSULB's mission. This is an opportunity to take on a highly visible role that works across the university, collaborating with campus managers, employees, students, the Chancellor's Office, General Counsel, commercial insurance providers, and fellow CSU risk professionals. Learn More: https://www.csulb.edu/financial-management/risk-management About this role: Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Financial Management, the Risk Manager leads programs and practices designed to identify, assess, and mitigate risk and potential liability associated with university activities and initiatives. The role serves as a primary resource to the campus community and general public on risk management matters while overseeing two Risk Professional team members. With responsibility spanning risk assessment, insurance programs, tort liability, claims, contracts, and legal holds, this position offers the opportunity to influence how risk is understood and managed across a complex university environment. How you will spend your time Risk Identification, Assessment & Mitigation (60%) Serve as a primary point of contact for campus-related risk management matters, providing guidance to university stakeholders and the public.

Compensation & Benefits The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $130,000 - $140,000.
