Senior Field Engineer - Civil

Play an integral role in ensuring the successful execution of major industrial construction projects by providing technical leadership, field engineering expertise, and construction support throughout the project lifecycle. As a Senior Field Engineer - Civil, you will serve as a critical link between engineering, construction, quality, commissioning, and project management teams, ensuring civil designs are effectively implemented in the field and that construction activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.

This is a field-based role located on an active industrial construction site. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time in the field supporting construction execution, resolving technical issues, validating design intent, and coordinating with engineering, construction, quality, commissioning, and contractor personnel. This is not a design-office engineering role. Success in this position requires a strong site presence, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to make sound technical decisions in a dynamic construction environment.

As a recognized technical specialist in civil construction and field engineering, you will provide consultation to engineering teams, construction management, craft supervision, quality personnel, commissioning teams, and project leadership. Your expertise will directly impact project safety, quality, schedule performance, constructability, and overall delivery success.

Purpose of the role

The Senior Field Engineer - Civil is responsible for providing technical engineering support and field leadership during the construction, commissioning, and startup phases of major projects. You will interpret civil engineering designs, evaluate field conditions, recommend practical technical solutions, coordinate implementation of design changes, and verify completed work meets design intent and project requirements.

Working closely with Construction Managers, Superintendents, Engineering, Quality, Commissioning, HSE, Survey, and contractor organizations, you will help ensure technical challenges are resolved efficiently while maintaining compliance with engineering standards, codes, project specifications, and customer requirements.

Acting as a subject matter expert within the civil discipline, you will support construction execution, mentor less experienced field personnel, and provide technical guidance that enables safe, predictable, and efficient project delivery.

You will be responsible for

• Providing civil field engineering expertise and technical support during construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
• Interpreting civil engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, standards, and technical documentation for construction teams.
• Evaluating field conditions and recommending design modifications or technical solutions necessary to support project execution.
• Coordinating engineering changes and ensuring field implementation aligns with approved project requirements.
• Supporting construction teams with technical problem solving and resolution of complex field issues.
• Reviewing construction activities to verify compliance with engineering requirements, specifications, codes, and standards.
• Providing technical oversight for site development, grading, earthworks, foundations, underground utilities, concrete structures, structural supports, paving, drainage systems, and civil infrastructure installations.
• Participating in constructability reviews, installation planning, and execution readiness activities.
• Providing technical guidance to construction management, field supervision, craft personnel, subcontractors, and contractors.
• Coordinating with engineering disciplines to resolve technical discrepancies and support field execution requirements.
• Monitoring construction progress and identifying technical risks that may impact project performance.
• Supporting material reviews, vendor documentation reviews, geotechnical recommendations, and technical evaluations.
• Participating in field inspections, surveys, walkdowns, testing activities, and verification of completed work.
• Supporting quality assurance and quality control activities to ensure construction conforms to design specifications.
• Assisting with commissioning, system turnover, startup readiness, and operational acceptance activities where civil scope interfaces with project systems.
• Preparing technical reports, field recommendations, engineering evaluations, request-for-information responses, and construction documentation.
• Supporting project planning and workface planning activities through technical input and field expertise.
• Providing mentorship and technical guidance to junior field engineers, coordinators, and technical personnel.
• Collaborating with customers, contractors, suppliers, survey teams, inspectors, and project stakeholders to support successful project execution.
• Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, constructability enhancements, and execution efficiency.

What you'll bring to the role

You bring a strong combination of civil engineering expertise, construction experience, field engineering knowledge, and practical problem-solving capability gained through complex industrial project environments.

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience.
• Typically 7+ years of relevant experience for degree-qualified candidates.
• Typically 12+ years of relevant experience for candidates with equivalent technical, construction, or trade backgrounds.
• Demonstrated experience supporting industrial construction, site development, commissioning, startup, operations, maintenance, or major capital project execution.
• Strong technical knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction methods, and field execution practices.
• Experience supporting earthwork activities, deep and shallow foundations, reinforced concrete construction, underground utilities, drainage systems, structural support systems, and site infrastructure projects.
• Experience interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, technical procedures, and construction documentation.
• Proven ability to evaluate field conditions and develop practical engineering solutions to support project execution.
• Experience coordinating design changes and resolving complex technical issues in active construction environments.
• Strong understanding of engineering principles, construction methodologies, installation practices, and commissioning interfaces.
• Experience supporting EPC, EPCM, industrial, energy, chemicals, resources, infrastructure, manufacturing, LNG, petrochemical, mining, or power generation projects.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound technical recommendations.
• Experience supporting quality, safety, construction, and commissioning activities within active project environments.
• Demonstrated ability to influence project teams through technical expertise and practical execution knowledge.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience preparing technical reports, recommendations, presentations, field instructions, and engineering documentation.
• Ability to lead technical initiatives and provide mentorship to engineering and construction personnel.
• Strong understanding of field engineering systems, processes, and tools.
• Knowledge of applicable civil design standards, construction codes, and industry specifications.
