Software Engineering Intern, RA

Rigaku is seeking a motivated Software Engineering Intern to support the development of next-generation automation solutions. In this role, you will design and implement an API wrapper around an existing Universal Robots (UR) control package, following relevant RAI design conventions to enable seamless integration with Rigaku's automation platforms.

During the first week, the intern will work in Rigaku's automation laboratory to become familiar with the robot, establish the development environment, confirm requirements, and perform supervised testing. The remainder of the internship will be completed remotely using secure access provided by Rigaku to the robot control computer and supporting development resources.

Responsibilities

• Review the existing UR control package and relevant RAI interfaces.
• Define and implement a clear, maintainable API wrapper.
• Support essential robot commands, state monitoring, configuration, and error handling.
• Develop unit and integration tests.
• Validate the solution using approved simulation and robot test environments.
• Create example integration code and technical documentation.
• Present the completed solution and provide a final project handover.

Qualifications

• Pursuing or recently completed a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Programming experience in Python, C++, C#, or a similar language.
• Understanding of object-oriented programming, APIs, and modular software design.
• Familiarity with Git and software testing.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
• Ability to travel to The Woodlands for the first week.

Experience with robotics, Universal Robots, industrial automation, network communication, or hardware abstraction layers is desirable but not required.

The intern must follow all Rigaku cybersecurity, confidentiality, laboratory, and robot-safety requirements. Remote access to the robot control computer does not independently authorize physical robot movement; robot operation must follow approved safety procedures and may require an authorized employee to be present in the laboratory.

Duration: Eight weeks, up to 40 hours per week

Compensation: $20 per hour

Location: One week on-site in The Woodlands, Texas, followed by seven weeks of remote work

Travel and Remote Work

Rigaku will arrange or reimburse approved airfare, lodging, meals, and local transportation for the required week in The Woodlands. Required business travel time will be paid and will count toward the internship's maximum hours.
