Climbing Wall Manager

Caltech seeks an experienced climber with exceptional communication skills to supervise recreational use of our bouldering cave and vertical climbing wall by our community members,as well as provide physical education instruction and fitness training to the members and students of the Caltech community. Should be a responsible and diligent person who performs work in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies. Will provide training and instruction to groups or individuals while providing an environment of safety and enjoyment for a variety of users from beginners to advance. This is a part time, benefit based position.

• Demonstrates and teaches fundamentals of bouldering and rock climbing, exercise or fitness program where formal instructional training and certification is required.
• Develops tiered fitness programs to meet various skill levels of students/participants.
• Maintains accurate records of classes including attendance and participation of students and participants.
• Works with management to develop physical education class/programs schedules.
• Safe supervision of the climbing wall used by members during open hours.
• Work in a diverse environment with a variety of climbers to safely participate,instruct, advise and provide assistance for members.
• Follow without fail, the climbing wall procedures as outlined by our documents and the assistant director for recreation.
• Priority on record keeping, cleanliness and order of the equipment and climbing spaces.
• Report any unsafe practices immediately, including the authority to immediate close the wall/gym.
• Works closely with APER operations team, climbing instructor, assistant directors for facilities and recreation.
• Recruit, train, and develop route setters.
• Provide monthly inspections of the climbing wall and climbing equipment. Maintain and replace old, broken, worn, equipment.
• Ensure climbing wall area and equipment is in a clean and safe condition.
• Enforce all climbing wall policies and procedures. Update climbing wall policies and follow industry standards.
• Ensure route quality (spinning holds, missing tape, broken holds, route variety, etc.) and change routes that have inconsistent moves or that may cause injury.
• Determine which walls will be stripped and set, and the number and difficulty of routes to be set.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

• 4-year college degree or equivalent combination of work experience.
• 2+ years of relevant work experience based on program needs.
• 2 years of vertical climbing instruction, experience and education.
• First Aid/CPR training and/or certification or ability to obtain by date of hire.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Mastery of ropes, belay technique; ability to verbally assist climbers navigating routes.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
