THE POSITION

Join the Department of Corrections (DOC) as an Accounting Intern and take part in work that supports real financial operations. This role at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart gives you a chance to grow your skills while contributing to important processes. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This internship provides a broad understanding of accounting functions within a correctional facility and helps you apply academic knowledge in a practical setting. As an Accounting Intern, you will perform the following duties:

  • Account Learning: Learn how individual inmate accounts work, including deposits, deductions, and other activities
  • Escrow Procedures: Observe how escrows are established, managed, and released for inmate-related expenses
  • Transaction Review: Review sample account transactions to understand how different actions affect balances
  • Procedure Analysis: Analyze financial processes to determine if actions follow established rules, regulations, and policies
  • Release Processes: Understand how inmate releases, transfers, and account closures are handled

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship, 37.5 hours per week, scheduled for approximately October to December
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Hourly Rate: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting hourly rate of $17.88 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • You must be enrolled in college studying for an accounting or business degree.
  • You must be 18 years old or older.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
