Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Greens Superintendent for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the broad general direction of the Head Professional/Manager, serves as a facility director under the title of Superintendent at Rutgers University Golf Course. Rutgers University Golf Course operated as a 9 hole facility until it went through a major renovation in 1960. The course reopened in 1963 as an 18-hole facility, playing at a length of 6,337 yards from the Scarlet tees. The facility also includes a Practice & Teaching Facility that has a 28 bay range and an 11,000 sq. ft. practice green with two greenside bunkers. The course is open from March 1st to December 20th and hosts up to 38,000 rounds of golf in that time period. We are home to a diverse mix of golfers from the tri-state area who include the general public, alumni, faculty/staff and students.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Responsible for all aspects of golf course maintenance, which includes, but is not limited to, all personnel matters for both full and part time maintenance staff, successful turf grass/plant/woodlands and material maintenance programs, budget planning, asset management which includes irrigation systems and all maintenance equipment, compliance with all licensing requirements and regulatory issues, and oversight and implementation of golf course improvement projects.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years as a Superintendent or 1st Assistant or equivalent knowledge and length of employment in a similar field.
  • Graduate of a two year turfgrass management school with a certificate in Turfgrass Management.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid driver's license
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that will be used to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups that includes students, staff, customers, golf committees and university management.
  • Advanced computer skills in most Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Requires a high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision making.
  • Constantly strives to improve all areas of the facility by seeking the most recent advances in golf course management .
  • These actions will put Rutgers University Golf Course in an excellent position for the future.
  • Ensure quality and cleanliness standards which includes, but is not limited to, employee hygiene and uniforms, equipment repair and storage areas, chemical and fertilizer areas, lunchroom areas, restrooms, etc.
  • Must enjoy the game of golf and have knowledge of the Rules of Golf.
  • Must have current NJ Pesticide License.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of contemporary agronomy and turfgrass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods; a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
  • Requires knowledge of current local, state and federal laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations which includes, but is not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, laws and regulations.
  • The successful candidate will take an active role in continuing educational opportunities such as seminars, community outreach and trade shows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification and a member in good standing with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.
  • Experience with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the creation of blog posts.
  • Experience with USGA Performance Management Tool and development/involvement in the Audubon Society.
  • Prefer good command of the Spanish language.

Equipment Utilized
  • Must be able to read and interpret diagnostic data from various tests conducted on soil, water, etc.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs independently and fulfill physical requirements of the position.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, mornings and evenings as business and course conditions demand.
