The Senior Manager, Engineering & Enterprise Architect serves as the organization's primary enterprise architect, providing enterprise-wide leadership for the design, integration, governance, and strategic direction of applications, infrastructure, data platforms, and development practices. This role establishes architecture standards, governance processes, and the Architecture Review Board (ARB), while serving as the key architecture decision-maker across on-premises and cloud environments. The role also leads a team of Integration/Productivity Platform Engineers and Data Engineers, ensuring technology solutions align with business objectives and long-term technology strategy. This is a player-coach role that combines direct enterprise architecture accountability with engineering leadership for a technical team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

- Serves as the organization's primary enterprise architect and maintains accountability for enterprise architecture across all technology domains.

- Directly performs and leads enterprise architecture activities, including architecture strategy, standards, governance, and solution reviews, while managing engineering resources responsible for implementation and operational support.

- Possesses broad and deep technical knowledge across enterprise platforms and can assess multiple solution options against business and technical criteria.

- Provides architectural guidance, mentorship, and direction to other technical staff, including direct reports.

Application and Integration Architecture

- Owns end-to-end application architecture across core platforms, including Oracle ERP, UKG, Azure-hosted applications, and associated middleware and integration layers.

- Defines integration patterns, API standards, and data exchange protocols, with particular focus on Azure cloud-to-on-premises connectivity over Nutanix infrastructure.

- Evaluates and recommends integration and middleware technologies to reduce point-to-point coupling and technical debt.

- Partners with application owners and project teams to embed architecture standards into project delivery, from vendor selection through go-live.

- Maintains current-state and target-state architecture documentation across the application and integration portfolio.

Infrastructure Architecture

- Serves as the enterprise architecture authority for all infrastructure domains, including the on-premises Nutanix hyperconverged data center environment and the Azure cloud platform.

- Defines and governs infrastructure architecture standards, including network topology, compute and storage patterns, identity and access management, and security boundaries.

- Owns hybrid connectivity architecture between Azure and on-premises environments, ensuring designs meet requirements for performance, resilience, and security.

- Establishes workload placement criteria and cloud adoption patterns that guide infrastructure decisions across the organization.

- Partners with infrastructure teams on platform roadmaps, capacity planning, and technology lifecycle decisions for both Nutanix and Azure environments.

- Ensures infrastructure architecture aligns with and enables the broader application, data, and development strategy.

Data and Analytics Architecture and Platform Ownership

- Serves as architect and product owner for the Azure Synapse/Databricks data platform, owning the platform roadmap, vendor relationship, licensing, and governance model.

- Defines data architecture standards, including data integration patterns, data modeling conventions, platform access controls, and data lifecycle management.

- Ensures the data platform is architected to support current reporting and analytics needs while scaling to meet emerging AI and machine learning use cases.

- Partners with data engineering, analytics, and business intelligence stakeholders to align platform capabilities with organizational data strategy.

- Governs data flows between Oracle ERP, UKG, and the data platform, ensuring integration patterns are consistent, maintainable, and auditable.

Enterprise Architecture Governance and Standards

- Establishes and operates an Architecture Review Board (ARB), defining scope, cadence, escalation paths, and decision rights.

- Develops and maintains architecture principles, standards, and guardrails appropriate to the organization's scale and maturity.

- Implements an architecture review process that supports project delivery without introducing unnecessary delay.

- Builds relationships with business stakeholders to ensure architecture decisions reflect business priorities.

AI-Assisted Development Strategy and Internal Build Capability

- Co-owns the organization's transition from a purchased-application model to an internal build capability, including defining build-versus-buy criteria and the boundary between internally-developed applications and systems of record.

- Architects the standard approach for internally-built applications that extend or surface data from Oracle, UKG, and the Synapse/Databricks data platform.

- Designs and governs the architecture for AI-assisted development practices, including the use of AI coding agents to support documentation, testing, and validation of deliverables against requirements.

- Establishes architecture guardrails for internally-built applications, including security boundaries, data access controls, API design standards, and application lifecycle management.

- Partners with the Director of IT Strategy and Business Solutions to support the evolution of Business Systems Analyst roles toward Product Owner/Developer responsibilities.

- Evaluates and recommends tools supporting internal development, including hosting platforms, CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and AI development assistants.

Team Leadership

- Leads and develops a team of Integration/Productivity Platform Engineers and Data Engineers, ensuring engineering activities align with enterprise architecture standards and technology strategy.

- Acts as the primary architecture mentor and subject matter expert for the organization, providing architecture direction across all technology initiatives.

- Promotes a culture of documentation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the team.

- Serves as a technical mentor for team members transitioning into product ownership and internal development roles.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

- This position carries supervisory responsibility for 3-5 direct reports.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field, plus 8 or more years of progressive IT experience, including at least 4 years in an enterprise or solution architecture role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Application and Integration Systems Knowledge

- Demonstrated experience designing and governing application integration architectures in complex, multi-system environments.

- Hands-on familiarity with Oracle ERP (Cloud or EBS), including data flows, integration points, and extensibility patterns.

- Experience with UKG or comparable HCM platforms from an integration and data perspective is preferred.

Infrastructure Knowledge

- Experience designing and governing enterprise infrastructure architecture across hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.

- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including networking, identity, security, and platform services.

- Familiarity with Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure, including AHV, Prism, and related platform capabilities, is preferred.

- Demonstrated ability to define hybrid connectivity patterns, workload placement criteria, and cloud adoption guardrails.

Data and Analytics Platform Knowledge

- Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks, or comparable modern data platform technologies.

- Demonstrated ability to define data architecture standards, govern data integration patterns, and manage a data platform roadmap.

- Familiarity with data governance, data lifecycle management, and platform security practices for cloud-based analytics environments.

- Experience in product or platform ownership - managing vendor relationships, licensing, and capability roadmaps - is preferred.

AI-Assisted and Modern Development Practices

- Working knowledge of modern software development practices, including API design, CI/CD, automated testing, and application lifecycle management, sufficient to govern and guide an internal build function.

- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tooling is preferred, including agentic coding assistants, prompt engineering for development workflows, or designing AI-augmented SDLC pipelines.

- Experience defining a build-versus-buy strategy or standing up an internal development capability in an organization transitioning away from SI-dependent delivery is preferred.

- Familiarity with governing edge or citizen-developer application patterns that extend core systems without creating unmanaged technical risk is preferred.

Governance and Standards

- Proven ability to establish enterprise architecture governance practices, including architecture standards, review processes, or ARB operations, ideally in a greenfield or early-stage EA environment.

- TOGAF, Zachman, or equivalent enterprise architecture framework certification is preferred.

Project Management

- Able to manage multiple concurrent architecture initiatives involving a range of stakeholders with minimal managerial assistance.

- Familiar with relevant project management tools, artifacts, and methodologies.

Agile/Scrum Techniques

- Able to operate effectively within Agile/Scrum delivery models and guide architecture input into sprint planning and backlog refinement.

- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate architecture concepts for business and executive audiences.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

None required. TOGAF, Zachman, or equivalent enterprise architecture certification is preferred.
