THE POSITION

The Geologic Survey Intern position with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is an exciting opportunity for students who want to learn, gain experience, and earn at the same time. You will discover how geologists study Pennsylvania's landscapes while taking part in real projects and lab activities. This role encourages curiosity and helps you develop valuable skills that support future education and career goals. It is a great way to start exploring the world of geology.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This internship supports the Bureau of Geologic Survey by helping with scientific tasks that introduce you to Pennsylvania geology. It provides hands-on experience with sample preparation, lab procedures, mapping tools, and educational outreach. As a Geologic Survey Intern, you will perform the following duties:

  • Sample Assistance: Help collect and prepare rock, soil, and mineral samples
  • Lab Skills: Learn basic laboratory steps such as rock preparation, mineral identification, and data logging
  • Archive Learning: Explore the core library and learn how geologic records are organized
  • Outreach Support: Create educational materials and displays for public events
  • Geology Basics: Build a foundation in rock types, geologic maps, and Pennsylvania geology

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Work schedule will vary based on the agreement between the high school and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) location.
  • High school internship starting Fall of 2026 for the 2026-2027 School Year.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
  • You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2026 - 2027 school year.

Additional Requirements:

  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
