What to Expect
Tesla Energy's Systems Engineering team is hiring a Sr Electrical Design Engineer to design and build custom automated test systems and high-power lab facilities to support cutting-edge Energy and AI product development. This role will drive design efforts for test equipment and facility infrastructure - from defining requirements through construction, commissioning, and deployment - managing project schedules across multiple concurrent builds while working with multi-faceted engineering design teams.

What You'll Do
  • Design electrical test systems for custom automated equipment and fault injection, including power distribution, safety circuits, instrumentation, DAQ systems, and control interfaces
  • Design and develop detailed electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and load schedules for laboratory infrastructure and facility power systems
  • Conduct electrical load analysis and size conductors, feeders, and protective devices for current and future lab capacity
  • Create and maintain system-level schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, harness drawings, and BOMs
  • Select and specify electrical and electronic components to meet electrical, mechanical, thermal, and controls requirements
  • Ensure designs meet all relevant codes and standards (NEC, California Electrical Code, NFPA) and provide technical oversight for electrical installations, verifying compliance with design intent and quality standards
  • Work closely with Mechanical, Controls, and Automation engineers to ensure clean electromechanical integration
  • Support build, bring-up, and debug of test equipment with technicians and contract manufacturers
  • Define and document electrical design standards, wiring practices, and configuration requirements across test systems
  • Collaborate with firmware and product teams to integrate Tesla hardware, PCBs, and firmware into test solutions

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical design for test equipment, laboratory infrastructure, or industrial automated systems
  • Strong electrical fundamentals: power distribution, conductor sizing, grounding, protection, signal integrity, and instrumentation
  • Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar software
  • Experience creating electrical schematics, panel layouts, harness designs, and BOMs
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a proven track record of working effectively across teams
  • Preferred: Experience with building and facilities electrical design, industrial safety standards (NFPA, UL, IEC), and/or automation controls and PLC-based systems
  • Preferred: Hands-on project management experience, including budget tracking, scheduling, and contractor coordination
  • Preferred: Comfortable working hands-on with hardware during build, bring-up, and debug
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of NEC and permitting processes
