Backup Engineer

Must Have Technical/Functional Skills

* Advanced administration and troubleshooting of IBM Storage Protect, including server, storage pool, policy domain, node, schedule, replication, database, log, and disaster recovery management.

* Hands-on expertise with IBM Storage Defender Data Protect, including deployment architecture, policy and SLA configuration, protection groups, recovery workflows, immutable data protection, and cyber-resilience use cases.

* Strong Commvault experience across CommServe, MediaAgent, deduplication database, storage policies, plans, auxiliary copy, replication, reporting, upgrades, and application-aware recovery.

* Strong Rubrik experience with Rubrik Security Cloud and on-premises clusters, SLA Domains, archival, replication, Live Mount, Instant Recovery, role-based access, API integrations, and ransomware recovery readiness.

* Deep knowledge of backup and recovery for VMware vSphere, physical Windows/Linux servers, databases, NAS/file systems, and cloud workloads in Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.

* Experience with immutable storage, air-gapped recovery patterns, encryption, MFA, least privilege, retention locking, clean-room recovery, and recovery validation.

* Proficiency in capacity planning, performance tuning, backup failure analysis, root-cause analysis, platform health checks, patching, upgrades, and migration planning.

* Scripting and automation using PowerShell, Python, shell scripting, REST APIs, or orchestration tools.

* Working knowledge of storage networking, SAN/NAS, object storage, TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, certificates, identity integration, and enterprise monitoring / ITSM tools.

* Ability to define and validate RPO/RTO requirements, produce operational documentation, and support audit, compliance, and disaster recovery exercises.

Roles & Responsibilities

* Implement, administer, monitor, and support enterprise backup and recovery platforms across IBM Storage Protect, IBM Storage Defender Data Protect, Commvault, and Rubrik.

* Own day-to-day service health, including job monitoring, incident resolution, problem management, capacity forecasting, performance optimization, and platform availability.

* Design protection policies based on application criticality, data classification, recovery objectives, retention requirements, and regulatory obligations.

* Perform backup onboarding, platform migrations, technology refreshes, version upgrades, patching, decommissioning, and workload transitions with minimal business disruption.

* Execute and coordinate complex restore and disaster recovery activities, including application-consistent recovery, point-in-time recovery, bare-metal recovery, VM recovery, database recovery, and mass-recovery scenarios.

* Implement cyber-resilient controls such as immutabi lity, privileged access separation, MFA, encryption, isolated recovery copies, anomaly monitoring, and periodic recovery testing.

* Develop automation to reduce manual operations, standardize provisioning, improve reporting, and accelerate incident response.

* Create and maintain architecture diagrams, SOPs, runbooks, recovery procedures, configuration baselines, operational dashboards, and knowledge articles.

* Partner with infrastructure, cloud, storage, database, security, application, and business continuity teams to resolve cross-platform issues and improve recoverability.

* Participate in on-call rotation, planned maintenance, major incident response, change reviews, audits, and disaster recovery exercises.

* Support knowledge sharing, technical reviews, and provide clear status updates, risk assessments, and remediation plans to technical and management stakeholders.

* Strong operational ownership, prioritization, and decision-making in high-severity production situations.

* Clear written and verbal communication with engineers, application owners, security teams, vendors, and senior stakeholders.

* Ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate change windows, drive problem resolution, and work independently in a distributed team.

* Effective mentoring, documentation, stakeholder management, and vendor escalation skills.

Salary Range: $70,000- $80,000 a year
