The Department

The mission of the Department of Communication and Media Studies is "to provide a first-class education in the art and analysis of communications media to undergraduates preparing to work in the media industries." We achieve this mission by offering courses that allow students to combine the theory and the practice of media. The faculty encourages and facilitates critical-analytical thinking, advanced written and oral communication, the mastery of media technologies, and both individual and group projects, all of which prepares students to work creatively in the media industries and to be discerning citizens and consumers.

Duties of the Position

To be considered for inclusion in our hiring pool, the candidate must demonstrate proficiency in one or more of the following skill sets: Video Production; Media Writing, Public Relations, New Media, Radio Broadcasting; Media Generalist. Applicants chosen for inclusion in the part-time lecturer pool will be ranked in each area according to their skill sets and experience as an instructor after being interviewed by the pool committee.

Potential courses a lecturer could be called upon to teach could include core courses in the major (e.g. Media Criticism, Introduction to Media Communication, Media Research and Theory, Media Ethics and Law); skills-based courses in the major (e.g. Media Writing, Public Relations, New Media, and Documentary Filmmaking, etc.); and General Education courses (e.g. 21st Century TV as Art, and Second-Year Research and Creative Experience).

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

MA in Communication, Media Studies, Journalism, or related field; MFA in Film & Video Production or related field; PhD or MA in Film Studies; or BA and at least seven years of professional experience in the field in which they are seeking to teach.

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.



  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month.
  • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

Application procedures for temporary faculty already teaching in the department:



  • Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.
  • Temporary Faculty who have taught for the department within the past two years only need to submit an updated CV to remain in the pool. The hiring committee will review the Personnel Action File and then determine whether an additional interview would be beneficial.
