Structural Engineer - Waterfront - Junior Level

Moffatt & Nichol's Anchorage office is actively seeking a junior-level, graduate Civil Engineer from an ABET accredited institution. Two years of waterfront/marine structural design experience is preferred, but recent graduates who can demonstrate an academic emphasis on structural engineering will be considered. The successful candidate will participate in the planning and design for waterfront structures projects, including large and small marinas, ports, terminals, vessel mooring and berthing structures, bulkheads, breakwater and shore protection structures. The ideal candidate will have, or be interested in gaining structural analysis and design experience; including structural modeling utilizing commercially available platforms.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Work closely with architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, and other design and construction professionals on multi-discipline projects
  • Execute analysis and design of structures comprised of timber, steel, concrete and composite materials
  • Develop plans, specifications, and calculations as required
  • Coordinate and integrate specific design solutions into project construction documents
  • Review design reports, computations and details of construction produced by others
  • Prepare construction cost estimates, including preparation of material quantity takeoffs
  • Review construction phase submittals, such as contractor fabrication and erection drawings, concrete mix designs, and product data sheets
  • Perform analysis, design, and/or condition assessment of existing waterfront structures, submerged marine systems, and other maritime projects
  • Participate in occasional site investigations and provide input to reports of findings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, with free electives demonstrating a structural emphasis.
  • Candidates with an advanced degree in structural engineering should indicate whether degree was course-based or research-based (i.e. thesis), and what emphasis was pursued.
  • Candidates shall have successfully completed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination.
  • It is preferred that entry-level candidates have internship or cooperative education experience in heavy civil, structural, or marine/waterfront design.
  • Experience with structural modeling, including three-dimensional finite element, nonlinear element, and/or soil-structure interaction is desirable. Computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) experience which is preferred includes the following platforms:
    • AutoCad
    • SAP2000
    • STAAD
    • LPile
    • MicroStation
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
