UC Santa Cruz Counseling and Psychological Services is seeking an Intervention Specialist experienced in mental health crisis response to join our Campus Mobile Crisis Team (CMCT). The CMCT program was created in 2022 to respond to emergent mental health situations on our campus and to support student voices asking for innovative, culturally sensitive, and tiered responses to campus mental health crises and the national trend towards non-police options.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service health facility offering clinical, educational, counseling, and psychiatry services to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high quality programs and services. The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited high-complexity clinical laboratory, and a campus pharmacy.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a variety of mental health and psychological services to UCSC undergraduate and graduate students, including intake assessment, brief individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, mental health outreach and workshop programming, and consultation services to support student academic success and mental health and well being.

Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources, & Empowerment), the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs.

Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. JOB SUMMARY

The Campus Mobile Crisis Team (CMCT) responds to calls for service involving behavioral health issues on the campus of UC Santa Cruz. The Campus Mobile Crisis Team Intervention Specialist is a field responder tasked with assessing and managing the behavioral health issues of students and others in crisis on campus, works in tandem with another Intervention Specialist, and is supervised by the Campus Mobile Crisis Team Supervisor. The UC Santa Cruz Campus Mobile Crisis Team is part of Student Health Services/Counseling and Psychological Services. This program provides a tiered response to campus mental health crises that includes a non-police option.

The CMCT Intervention Specialist provides mobile crisis response services to diverse students and other members of the UCSC community, with an important focus on providing access and crisis response to the BIPOC student population. The CMCT improves the campus infrastructure for supporting students experiencing crises and expanding outcome monitoring and follow-up services for students in crisis. Hours of operation: Monday-Tuesday, 2:00 PM-12 midnight and Wednesday-Sunday, 12 noon-12 midnight.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $72,000 - $80,000/ annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Mobile Crisis Intervention and Prevention

  • Provides a regular presence on campus as part of the Campus Mobile Crisis Team as dispatched by central communications and during routine rounds.
  • Provides behavioral health support and care to people experiencing mental health crises or mild intoxication.
  • Applies de-escalation techniques and crisis communication/management.
  • Conducts mental health assessments and crisis intervention for students in the field.
  • Maintains confidentiality and respects the boundaries of clients experiencing emotional distress.
  • Responds to high-intensity situations with police and fire; Communicates with police to provide backup as indicated.
  • Works closely with EMT to strategize call responses; Makes transport decisions in collaboration with EMT regarding patient care.
  • Assists in promoting behavioral health education components to the campus community utilizing a variety of intervention techniques.
  • Conducts field-based needs analysis for behavioral health intervention based on crisis activity and response.
  • Implements and evaluates effectiveness of behavioral health intervention programs in conjunction with Mobile Crisis Intervention Supervisor.
  • Once certified, writes 5150's/Involuntary Hospitalization holds to Crisis Stabilization Program.
  • Documents services provided; Records and tracks relevant call data.

50% - Community Education

  • Maintains a presence across campus and builds community within the student population creating positive rapport and visibility.
  • Trains campus residential housing staff (resident assistants, CHES personnel) on recognizing and responding to students in distress.
  • Engages with residential students on effectively resolving challenging peer interactions.
  • Collaborates with campus safety officers, UC Police Department, and Risk Services regarding responding to students in distress.
  • Develops, secures, and maintains any equipment or instructional materials needed to conduct interventions and provide support.
  • Attends required department and clinic meetings and shares in other responsibilities as relevant.
  • Completes all required trainings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability and willingness to obtain LPS (Lanterman-Petris-Short Act) designation from Santa Cruz County Behavioral Health. LPS designation allows the holder to write an involuntary hold for a psychiatric hospitalization (5150). In Santa Cruz County this results in an evaluation by the local Crisis Stabilization Program that can last up to 24 hours, after which a determination is made whether a further hold is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Two years of experience in crisis intervention or delivery of mental health services in non-traditional settings, preferably field based intervention.
  • Ability to drive a large passenger van.
  • Knowledge and experience regarding harm reduction, trauma-informed care, patient-centered care, suicide assessment, and motivational interviewing.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidence of privileged information and perform a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, organizational skills, flexibility and discretion.
  • Experience interacting with diverse individuals of various ethnic, racial, social, cultural, economic, political, sexual orientation and gender identities. Demonstrated multicultural experience, skills and expertise providing culturally competent and trauma informed services to a BIPOC client population.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment Prevention) training every two years.
  • Required to take HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) training within 30 days of hire.

  • Ability to walk multiple nightly rounds on uneven surfaces and repeatedly climb stairs.
