Job Summary

Under direct supervision, the Radiation Therapist is responsible for various radiotherapy and hyperthermia treatment procedures at a technical level. Responsibilities include setting up patient for treatment, following through on specific treatment, documenting treatment performed and working with department staff for maximum efficiency of services. As a multi-campus department, staff may be required to work at other campuses as assigned following Union guidelines for scheduling. Compliance with established Medical Center Environmental Safety Policies, HIPAA Standards, Joint Commission guidelines, and House and Telephone Standards, AIDET, and department QI projects is required.

  1. Assessment
    1. Identifies type and area to be treated in preparation. As appropriate performs simulation before actual treatment.
    2. Utilize available reports and medical record information to increase awareness of current or potential problems.
    3. Recognize if patient is having problems and take appropriate action. Seek council with appropriate professionals.
  2. Implementation
    1. Set-up equipment and computer.
    2. Prepare and check all required documents prior to treatment. Including consents, MD orders and approvals, Plan QA, New Start Check list, etc...
    3. Place reference markings on patient's body, if needed.
    4. Position patient for treatment and verify imaging requirements.
    5. Perform TIME OUT procedures.
    6. Document treatment in EMR and appropriate files.
    7. Perform minor equipment adjustments as needed.
  3. Advocacy/Patient Education
    1. Respond to emotional needs of patients by demonstrating sensitivity to their emotional state and relating in an appropriate manner.
    2. Explain treatment procedures, side effects, and dietary and skin care procedures to patients.
    3. Instruct students and cooperate with other department staff (residents, nurses, treat planning, etc.).
  4. Coordination/Communication
    1. Maintain open communication and facilitate continuity of care for patients and family with members of the health care team.
    2. Participate in patient centered conferences as requested.
    3. Actively participate in staff meetings.
  5. Professionalism/Education
    1. Demonstrate courtesy, common sense and follow through in all communications and practices.
    2. Assume responsibility for own career growth, recognizing the need to increase knowledge and keeping informed of current trends and developments within own area of practice.
    3. Expand skills and show initiative.
    4. Comply with work related policies including license renewal and other related certifications.
    5. Comply with all Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practices. Comply with activities mandated by JCAHO.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications


  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Therapeutic Radiology.
  • Licensure by the state of California in Therapeutic Radiology.
  • BLS certified
  • Experience with the use of Megavoltage, supervoltage, and orthovoltage machines.
  • Knowledge of Simulation procedures, IORT, Radioactive implants, HDR, Brachytherapy and Hyperthermia procedures.
  • Graduation from an accredited radiation therapy school.
  • Ability to act independently, ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment regarding set-up or treatment decisions.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a variety of people.
  • Positive attitude toward teamwork concept essential.
