About the Job

The Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts is accepting applications for single course, part-time lecturers (two courses/term) and full-time (three courses/term) to teach courses that may occur in Fall 2024 (August 26, 2024 - January 8, 2025), Spring 2025 (January 9, 2025 - May 24, 2025), or the Summer 2025 session. The Psychology Department occasionally needs lecturers to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty members or graduate students. This search will establish a "pool" of instructors if such openings occur during the 2024/25 academic year. Applicants may be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year.

In AY2024-2025 we are particularly interested in candidates able to teach courses such as Psy 3011 Introduction to Learning & Behavior, Psy 3061 Introduction to Biological Psychology, Psy 3206 Health Psychology, Psy 3301 Introduction to Cultural Psychology, Psy 3617 Introduction to Clinical Psychology, Psy 3666 Human Sexuality, Psy 4207/5207 Personality & Social Behavior, Psy 4501 Psychology of Women & Gender, and/or other courses. Teaching may be for day, evening or online courses. Appointments may or may not be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching and research has prepared them to contribute to the Psychology Department's commitment to working with a diverse student population, and in building inclusivity, diversity, and equity into their courses.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare syllabi and Canvas course sites and teach undergraduate or graduate Psychology courses as needed, conditional on qualifications
  • Hold regular office hours
  • Evaluate student learning and assign grades
  • Communicate instructor evaluation process to students
  • Respond in a timely fashion to student needs and issues
  • Receive and respond to department and University emails and respond in a timely manner
  • Resolve student and classroom issues in consultation with the Department.
  • Supervise any teaching assistants or section leaders assigned by Department and complete reviews at end of semester
  • Understand and follow all relevant University policies and procedures and participate in trainings, as required
  • Participate in relevant departmental meetings

Performance standards:

  • Positive evaluations from students and willingness to learn from experiments with pedagogy and peers with relevant knowledge.
  • Demonstration of commitment to quality teaching professional development.
  • Effective handling and resolution of student and classroom challenges.

Final job offer contingent upon complete background check and receipt of official transcripts.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Psychology or related field, such as Neuroscience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expertise with psychological concepts applicable to assigned course(s).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching or research experience in introductory, research methods/statistics, cognitive, biological, personality, social, clinical, counseling, or industrial/organizational psychology or a related field.
  • Experience with Canvas and online learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse student population.
