POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist provides skill and initiative to the department's mission through interactions with staff, manager and others as necessary. The ultrasound technologist's primary duties are to generate diagnostic sonographic images for the radiologists, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary through the manager and lead technologist.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for proper departmental workflow. Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures, i.e. biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative etc. Satisfies operational requirements to include covering the department as determined necessary through either the Manager or Lead technologist.

Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.

Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments.

Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times.

Assumes responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic exam.

Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures as required.

Sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper patient positioning and technique to ensure patient comfort and safety,

and to prevent compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer..

Performs duties as required in all areas of the department to include all campuses and either within Ultrasound or outside when appropriate for the hospital mission as determined by either the Manager or Lead technologist.

Work schedules as required through regularly scheduled hours or overtime as required for department needs.

Performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study. Identify and document any limitations to the sonographic exam.

Works through radiologist requirements to provide appropriate views and films and provides additional views and variations of techniques as required by Radiologist, Manager or Lead technologist.

Provides service and care to patients of all ages.

Maintains equipment through interaction with both management and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital. Keep exam rooms clean, tidy and ready for use.

Follow all high level disinfection policies and procedures.

Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved.

Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand.

Handles telephone calls and requests for services over the telephone and through other means both professionally and appropriately.

Treats patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect and reports any/all problems to manager.

Accommodates patient needs and staffing needs and requirements through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.

Understands the requirements of the department by providing services to patients not only in performing of studies but also in providing any/all information on reports as necessary and appropriate.

Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and any inappropriate behavior.

Monitors patient conditions and if/when conditions are determined assistance may be required of an employee to take actions to facilitate the best course of action to include: nursing involvement, other assistance, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.

Competently and efficiently operate all electronic systems, such as PACS, RIS, Epic and others as required by the department and hospital.

Ensures that all required documentation is properly performed to include but not limited to any/all of the following: proper filling out of requisitions, proper procedures completion related to all procedures performed, and proper recording of any required hospital/department and or insurance of managed care requirements for proper recording and or billing of Radiology procedures.

Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.

Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary.

Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.

JOB DESCRIPTION CHARACTERISTICS

EDUCATION:

Associate's degree (or equivalent from two-year college) or certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography must be obtained prior to hire,

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) (OB or AB or RVT)

Accreditation must be attained prior to hire except for OB/GYN (one year to obtain accreditation)

EXPERIENCE:

Experience in related clinical area is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Work requires knowledge of principles and procedures of Ultrasound and the operation and maintenance of Ultrasound equipment.

Work requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, coworkers, students and physicians.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS (Responsible for 24 hr. coverage, etc.):

The ultrasound department requires 24/7 coverage so on occasion staff may need to be mandated to work overtime or to cover other shifts other than their own.
