Job Summary

Perform a full range of cleaning tasks, individually or as part of a group, on a daily basis in residence halls and other designated areas. Perform seasonal and as-needed project work. Support SHDS Conference Housing operations.

Sweep, mop, scrub residential floors. Empty waste receptacles; replace light bulbs; fill soap and paper product dispensers. Sweep and wash outside walkways and entrances to facilities. Vacuum rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, pillows, and other designated materials. Clean and disinfect restrooms and shower rooms; including but not limited to walls, shower stalls, sinks, toilets, mirrors, fixtures, shower curtains, and floors. Dust and clean furniture, woodwork, light fixtures, blinds, cabinets, painted walls, radiators, grill ducts, filing cabinets and other equipment, and other surfaces. Operate, set up, and dismantle a full range of cleaning equipment, including hand and power tools, vacuum cleaners, buffers, wall washing machines; wet/dry vacuums, waxers, floor scrubbing and polishing machines. Clean partitions, glass, mirrors, showcases, glass panels, inside windows on all floors and outside windows on ground floor level. Maintain supplies and custodial closets; tracking and communicating inventory and low stock. Ensure chemical safety and appropriate chemical use via regular review of, and familiarity with, MSDS chemical information. Report building security; report safety and sanitation hazards. Wax and/or polish furniture, woodwork, light fixtures, blinds, cabinets, painted walls, radiators, grill ducts, filing cabinets and other equipment, and other surfaces. Utilize powered equipment, such as power washers, to clean external residential areas. Strip, wax, and polish floors by hand and using power equipment. Shampoo and steam clean rugs and carpets. Clean trash chutes; manage dumpsters and disposal sites. Turn over conference housing guest rooms upon group departures; clean and inspect rooms post-stay to prepare for next group of conference housing arrivals. Clean individual restrooms and communal restrooms to University and Department standards daily and upon guest departure. Provide conference housing guest linen service; clean bed sheets, mattress covers, pillowcases, blankets, and towels. Provide clean linen delivery to rooms.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience performing custodial work.
  • Experience using and knowledge of basic materials and equipment used in custodial work. (i.e., carpet cleaners, vacuums and floor polishers).
  • Knowledge of cleaning solvents, degreasers, disinfectants, floor finishes, and other related chemicals used in custodial work.
  • Communication skills to interact effectively with residents and staff. Skills to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skills to organize and prioritize workload to complete work effectively.
  • Knowledge of standard safety precautions and rules used in custodial work.
  • Basic customer service skills to interact with a diverse population.

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. Physical Demands

  • Manipulate or assemble objects.

Work Environment

  • Successful completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services.
  • Work alone in a building with heavy traffic. Work in areas where hazardous materials are present. Specific hazards include custodial cleaning supplies such as acid cleaners, ammonia, lye and bleach as well as blood and other potentially infectious materials. Facilities may have asbestos-containing construction materials.
