Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Assistant Director of New Student Transitions, this position is focused on supporting UNCG's first-year online degree seeking students by collaborating with UNCG campus partners and within the department to support various initiatives, including Online Student Orientation, Your First Year Online programming, and FYE 101: Succeed at the G. This position also oversees the administration of a peer support program for online students and other initiatives related to orientation, transition, and retention.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to) :
Peer Support program for First-Year Online Students

  • Assist with the development and implementation of a peer support program tailored to first-year online students
  • Oversee the administration of the peer support program, including managing online platforms, conducting assessment, running reports, etc.
  • Recruit, train, support, manage, and celebrate the undergraduate peer support student staff
  • Provide support and conduct outreach to online students based on referrals and reported concerns


NST & FYE Online Initiatives Support

  • Help to facilitate a seamless transition for online degree seeking students into UNCG through Online Student Orientation (ONL100 & ONL101)
  • Edit, update, and maintain Online Student Orientation content
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Your First Year (YFY) programs and/or events tailored for online student success and support
  • Based on program assessments and student feedback, provide input and participate in collaborative planning around needed content adjustments or PAL support in the FYE101 online course

Online Student Support & Communications

  • Provide support to first year online students in various ways including managing the ONL100 email, facilitating outreach, answering questions through the texting platform, etc.
  • Host drop-in hours to meet with online students in need of support and connection to resources

Additional New Student Transitions & First Year Experience Initiatives

  • Lead special assessment projects pertaining to services offered for first-year online students
  • Provide support for NST & FYE departmental programs and services, regardless of the specific functions of each job
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Starting in August 2024, 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters for a remuneration of a $15,000 stipend.
  • Professional development funds may be available in support of departmental needs.
  • Graduate assistants are entitled to student holidays. However, due to the nature of orientation/transition programs, often occurring during breaks, Graduate Assistants will be required at times to return early or leave late for such breaks. Individual accommodations may be made for each break with the direct supervisor. Graduate Assistants do not accrue vacation time. Evening and weekend hours are to be expected during peak programming seasons. Individual accommodations for alternative schedules, flex time and/or time off will be negotiated with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • Quality written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Preference is given to students enrolled in an online program.
  • Experience in online learning is preferred.
  • Experience in program planning, communications, and assessment is preferred.
