Description

Provide crisis counseling and psychoeducation to physically and sexually abused or neglected children and their families as part of the multidisciplinary child protection team.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Master's Degree
Social Work (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Must be bilingual (preferred)
Must have a high energy level and commitment to social welfare and child health advocacy issues.
Must demonstrate clinical skill in individual and family crisis intervention.
Must be available to law enforcement agencies for consultation and expert testimony
Must be able to demonstrate appropriate use of hospital and community resources on behalf of children and their families.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
Ability to relate to diverse patient populations.
Ability to work in highly emotionally charged situations.
Experience with and ability to interact and collaborate in a multi-systems network including law enforcement, judicial, social services, mental health and medical.
Requires trauma informal skills, knowledge and experience in crisis intervention.
Must have knowledge of acute psychiatric intervention, child maltreatment and protective services.
Must be able to assess the mental health status of the child, growth and developmental needs of the child, identify criteria for clinical judgment or decision making to protect the child and reduce impact of abusive behavior.

Functional Accountabilities
Professional Development



  • Participates in professional development and community education activities including forums, workshops, conferences and other activities directed at increasing professional competencies and raising community awareness of issues related to child abuse and neglect.


  • Completes medical record documentation, statistical and other reports promptly and efficiently.


  • Attends regularly all team, staff and divisional meetings. Participation in clinical case presentations.

Diagnostic Assessment



  • Accepts and triages referrals, provides crisis intervention, and conducts crisis assessments which includes assessing for suicides risk on all suspected cases of child abuse and neglect which comes to the attention of CAPC through referrals, walk-ins and scheduled center appointments.


  • Evaluates patient status including assessing for suicidality/homicidality.


  • Completes social histories and psychosocial assessments for the medical record, on an ongoing basis.


  • Appropriately triages patient to correct services.


  • Displays competency when interviewing family members for the purpose of assessment and developing an intervention plan.


  • Completes required documents to the assessment in a clear, concise, and timely manner.


  • Remains knowledgeable about community resources/placements for children and families to assist in the attainment of treatment goals.


  • Communicates with outside agencies on the behalf of the patient to ensure continuity of care and treatments progress.


Multidisciplinary Interventions



  • Intervenes directly with parents and/or caretakers providing case management and assessing parenting skills and areas of existing and potential strengths and conflict related to child rearing or intra-familial relationships.


  • Participates in the hospital on-call system including provision of generic crisis intervention services to children abused, suspected of being abused and neglected and their families. Participation specifically in weekday on-call systems from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and afterhours back-up.


  • Educates staff about psychosocial issues impacting patient.


  • Utilizes a theoretical framework for the focus of the crisis intervention.


  • Encourages positive communication among family members.


  • Recognizes progress and obstacles towards treatment goals and appropriately intervenes.


  • Completes medical record documentation, statistical and other reports promptly and efficiently.


  • Remains knowledgeable about community resources/placements for children and families to assist in the attainment of treatment goals.


  • Communicates with outside agencies on the behalf of the patient to ensure continuity of care and treatments progress.
