JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Medicine, The Cheng/Ang Lab at Jake Gittlen Laboratories for Cancer Research, in Hershey, PA is searching for a Web Designer.

The successful applicant will be engage collaboratively in the laboratory mission to create user-friendly, scientifically useful, attractive, and functionally polished scientific web-based resources for science and society. The lab maintains two atlases, www.bio-atlas.psu.edu and http://daphnia.io/. This individual will initially work with our atlases' coordinators and IT department to recode the Bio-atlas and bring it up-to-date. This individual will be responsible for implementing new features and functionality, ensuring high-performance and availability, and maintaining all technical aspects of the Bio-atlas webpage. The ideal candidate would have hands-on experience developing and maintaining scientific websites; be proficient with core web technologies including but not limited to, JavaScript (jQuery), CSS, Web standards, Python, Django, SQL, Apache, OpenSeaDragon and HTML/HTML5; have experience working with PHP and creating custom Drupal modules; have a solid understanding of databases; have experience with version control and be able to demonstrate his or her ability to meet project goals and document solutions. This candidate will also perform unit integration and testing, troubleshoot errors in new and legacy code. This person would be comfortable with collaboration and communication tools such as Jira, GitLab, Slack, Teams, etc. Basic Linux admin skills, familiarity with accessibility and assistive technologies are also helpful.

In addition, it will be an added advantage if this individual has the knowledge of bioinformatics and can assist the lab in genomic analysis. The genomic data includes data from SNP chip genotyping, whole genome sequencing generated using platforms from Illumina, Bionano, Nanopore and PacBio, and transcriptomics.

The technologist must also keep a detailed record of all workflows, software documentation, and experiments, help to train new staff or students, assist in writing manuscripts and proposals, and collaborate with other research staff. The candidate is expected to communicate daily with PIs and co-workers he/she/they are working with directly. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as in a team and be able to complete assigned tasks in timely manner.

TYPICAL EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

2+ years related experience

Associate's Degree or higher, Bachelor of Science Degree or related field preferred

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.

This position will require successful completion of standard background checks.

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$56,200.00 - $81,500.00
