The ACPE Chaplain Resident position is a full-time, temporary work-study program typically lasting one year and consisting of three units of Clinical Pastoral Education. The Chaplain Resident provides or makes available spiritual, religious, and emotional care for patients and their families during the patient's hospitalization. Provides spiritual and emotional support for the hospital staff. Participates in Clinical Pastoral Education processes such as pastoral reflection, pastoral formation, and personal identity clarification, with a view toward pastoral and personal growth, integration, and competence. Works toward the outcomes of Level II CPE articulated in the ACPE Standards and in preparation for certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or the National Association of Jewish Chaplains.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. A graduate level theological degree from an accredited school preferredORequivalent graduate-level degree that may be counted towards board certification.

2. One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred.

3. Ordained or commissioned for ministry, or in the process of ordination/commissioning, with a recognized faith group.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned.

1. Makes spiritual care visits to patients, their families, and hospital staff on a regular and consistent basis to enable them to utilize, discover, or develop their spiritual resources.

2. Interacts consistently in a warm manner that effectively invites others into pastoral relationships

3. Provides religious resources that are appropriate in light of the other's tradition, including reading material, provision for ceremonies or rituals, and arranging of visits by faith representatives from the community when specifically requested.

4. Documents in the patient record and in departmental records.Communicates relevant patient information with the Spiritual Care team and interdisciplinary team members.

5. Maintains a consistent accountability for spiritual care activities with staff, Spiritual Care team members, and Department Director.

6. Participates as a Spiritual Care team member in the on-call pager rotation that provides 24-hour availability of spiritual care. Provides on-call coverage on weekends, overnights, and observed holidays as assigned.

7. Participates in educational seminars and other personal/professional development related to spiritual care skills and knowledge.

8. Provides accurate information related to interaction with patients, family members, and staff through weekly sessions with the ACPE Certified Educator.

9. Adheres to the Code of Ethics for the Association of Professional Chaplains or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

1. Is in good physical condition to withstand the frequent requests for crisis intervention from patients and staff.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Residents should have the emotional capacity for an extensive period of intensive, experiential learning in a stressful healthcare environment.

2. Ability to use office technology systems, positive communication and customer satisfaction skills, ability to think system-wide about spiritual care services, ability to adjust to change.
