Radiation Therapy Chief of Physics

Job Summary:

The following represents a summary of the major roles and functions of the

Chief of Physics:

- Provides leadership for coordination of clinical care delivery for radiation oncology patients in the Kentuckiana region with the Oncology Program Director and the Medical Directors.

- Collaborates with the Oncology Program Director to provide administrative leadership of Louisville and Eastpoint radiation centers.

- Collaborates with the Oncology Program Director and the Medical Directors for strategic planning, operations, budgeting, cost/benefit analyses and recruitment.

- Collaborates with Radiation Oncology preferred vendors on all equipment purchases and upgrades.

- Oversees Process Improvement initiatives for the Kentuckiana region.

- Liaison to maintain line of communication between physicists, therapists, physicians, and administrative staff.

- Participation in treatment planning for the cancer patient under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist. Includes review of computer applications relevant to the treatment and quality assurance mechanisms regarding dose distribution, and evaluation of treatment plans.

- Review daily output/dose measurements, maintenance reports, and monthly calibration of therapy equipment, oversee the installation of new equipment and acceptance testing of same, and establishing overall quality assurance mechanisms used in the department.

- Organize and lead physics and dosimetry processes for the Kentuckiana region.

- Responsibility for physics related policies and procedures for all Radiation departments.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a summary of the major functions of this position. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

1. Interviews, selects, trains, orients, schedules, assigns, directs and supervises department personnel. Administers the employee performance program including evaluation, coaching for improvement and/or professional growth, as well as progressive discipline process. Supports a Just Culture environment.

2. Oversees daily operations of the Radiation Center and Multidisciplinary Clinic including systems and processes related to treatment planning, delivery of care, staffing, efficiency, coding and billing, as well as physician, staff and patient satisfaction.

3. Collaborates with Oncology Program Director and the Medical Directors of the Radiation Center, Cancer Program and BH Louisville Executive leaders in the preparation of budgets, evaluation of cost analysis in regards to radiation therapy procedures, clinical delivery of care, operational improvements, clinical services provided in clinics, and equipment selection.

4. Oversees department and quality improvement meetings, service contracts, equipment, and new technology implementation

5. Provide regional leadership for physics and dosimetry services

6. Ensure department readiness for regulatory and accreditation surveys. (Joint Commission, ACR, etc.).

7. Provide broad-scope clinical physics services to assure appropriate, accurate, and safe functionality of all treatment units, treatment planning computers, and simulator.

8. Provide daily checks of new patient setups, dose calculations, and computerized treatment plans.

9. Participate in the radiation protection program for staff and patients in the radiation center.

10. Oversee scheduling for required periodic maintenance of radiation equipment.

11. Perform weekly continuing physics services for the radiation center.

12. Provide daily physics checks for changes in dose calculations for patient field revisions.

13. Assist in maintaining records, consistent with HIPPA requirements and Baptist Health policy and procedure.

14. Provide input for equipment purchases and for supplies related to physics activities.

15. Pursue appropriate continuing education.

16. Provide annual in-service education/training for the radiation center personnel.

17. Perform acceptance and commissioning of new equipment/ technology.

18. Perform all monthly and annual QA on machines as well as annual Treatment Planning System QA

19. Assist in treatment planning for complex cases and stereotactic treatment planning.

20. Participate in system level/service line oncology councils, as appropriate.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:

• MS in therapeutic medical physics or medical radiation physics

• Board Certified in Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology.

• Minimum 4-5 years clinical experience.

• Advanced knowledge of computerized treatment planning systems, treatment machines and accessories.

• Strong clinical knowledge of all aspects of medical radiation physics.

• Flexible to be on call weekends and holidays, and to work above standard hours to meet staffing needs.

• Able to operate standard office equipment.

• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Self-motivation and ability to work well with minimal supervision.

• Experience with Stereotactic Radio Surgery, Stereotactic Radiation Therapy, Eclipse Treatment Planning System, and Aria software preferred.
