Job Description

As a UMKC employee in the Electrician trade, you will perform skilled work on a journey level, focusing on the installation, maintenance, service, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Your work will be subject to spot checks and inspections to ensure it meets specifications and accepted industry standards. You will engage in various tasks, including working on main switchgear and troubleshooting electrical issues in buildings across campus. Additionally, you will have the chance to expand your skills by collaborating with the Campus Facilities Department and other skilled trades such as HVAC, locksmithing, and plumbing. Each day on campus is unique, as you will work in a wide variety of buildings, ranging from over 100 years old to just under 2 years old, including iconic structures like Scofield Hall, which hold significant history in Kansas City. Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair AC and DC electrical wiring systems, power sources, laboratory equipment, and other components such as conduit, electrical panels, signal and alarm systems, lighting, receptacles, relays and controls, motors, generators, rectifiers, transformers, electric meters etc. May replace interior and exterior lamps as necessary at varying heights.
  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repair on overhead and underground electrical circuits and components. May perform oiling, cleaning, brush replacement, and other repair of equipment as required. May install, maintain, and repair circuits and equipment involving electronic components. Troubleshoot equipment, utilizing testing devices.
  • Clean, maintain, safely operate, and properly store all tools and equipment.
  • Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Shift

7:30am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent; demonstrated skills may offset requirements and a minimum of 4-years of actual experience in the trade, including apprentice or vocational training.
  • Knowledge and skill in the maintenance and use of tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination.
  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes.
  • Depending on the nature of work performed, the incumbent may be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the "Industrial Standard for Respirator Use".
  • Valid driver's license required.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Pay rate for the position commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.

This position is eligible for a $1,500 hiring incentive (see HR-104 Hiring Incentives for Faculty and Staff).
