CPS Energy is seeking an experienced Director Major Projects to lead and manage multiple project managers on complex, highly visible projects within our Power Generation department.

Position Summary

Leads a shared services organization providing strong leadership and strategic direction for technical support, project management, project controls, contractor services, and new generation technology research & project development for CPS Energy Power Generation. The Director leads and manages multiple project managers that have responsibility for concurrent, complex, highly visible projects within Power Generation (PG). As functional process owner, Director will establish, train and employ standardized procedures and practices for specific services and delivery support of plant operations, maintenance, and capital improvement work in accordance with industry best practices. The incumbent will work closely with Power Generation leadership to define clear measures of success and provide regular performance reporting.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Establish working alliances with stakeholders to facilitate seamless communication, consultation and issues resolution.
  • Work closely with plant leaders to identify and implement Shared Services support activities and initiatives in furtherance of plant and power generation objectives.
  • Identify key performance measures for assigned teams and implement team-specific scorecard performance reporting.
  • Conduct annual team assessments with stakeholders and team input to evaluate team performance relative to established standards.
  • Identify, train and implement changes needed to achieve best in class team performance.
  • Work with individual employees to identify development needs and actively sponsor training and improvement initiatives using People & Culture provided tools.
  • Work with employee teams to evaluate performance and sponsor improvement training and initiatives.
  • Actively participate in skill development training and initiatives to support business needs and performance improvement objectives.
  • Prepare clear, well-structured reports and presentations.
  • Regularly refine performance objectives and roles and responsibilities for each functional area to support continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership and technical direction for assigned programs and initiatives.
  • Employ communication methods with internal and external stakeholders that facilitate efficient information exchange and permit timely resolution of issues.
  • Establish reporting processes that clearly account for performance and provide transparency into the processes employed.
  • Develop and maintain solid working knowledge of generation technology, commercial markets and regulatory requirements.
  • Effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Establish, implement and adherence to Business Plans and Budgets for all assigned areas.
  • Maintain functional and milestone controls for all assigned areas.
  • Effectively oversee implementation of, and conformance with CPS Energy procedures, practices and controls.

Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Experience in plant operations or maintenance experience and demonstrated heavy industrial leadership experience.
Experience negotiating commercial terms and conditions and executing for large Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) Capital Projects.
Strong coaching / mentoring skills including process implementation training and testing.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to perform advanced computations and analysis and apply results to projects and processes.
Actively promote and maintain a culture of respectful compliance - Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory.
Excellent communication skills - written, verbal, and presentations.
Ability to read, understand, analyze and make service level and supply agreements with contractors / suppliers.
Ability to direct multiple activities in a highly dynamic environment that requires continuous reprioritization as determined by operational and maintenance situations as they arise daily.
Working knowledge of work management systems such as - SAP, Maximo, etc.
Working knowledge of PI applications, GADS performance reporting.
Ability to delegate assignments to appropriate parties.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Proficient in project management principles and scheduling tools including Primavera.
Demonstrate best value decision-making based on commercial and technical considerations.
Prepare clear, well-structured reports and presentations.
Must have favorable driving record.
Understanding of applicable environmental and regulatory permits and limits.
Ability to read, understand and use drawings, specifications and regulatory statutes and references.
Familiar w/ all electric, mech, controls, instrumentation, & civil components & equip incl but not limited to: turbines, boilers, boiler feed pump, digital control systems, generators, transformers, valves, motors, fans, switchgear, & variable freq drives.
Familiar with unit operations, maintenance, heat rates, component condition monitoring.
Familiar with combustion turbines, combined cycles, gas steam, coal and coal handling, coal generation plants and coal handling equipment.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in civil, environmental, electrical or mechanical engineering, business administration, or similar.
  • PE registration/ State of Texas Preferred
  • PMP Certification preferred

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, electrical or mechanical engineering, business administration, or similar.
Required Certifications
Working Environment
The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions.
The employee reg works near moving mechanical parts & may be exposed to toxic or caustic chem, fumes or airborne particles, potential risk of electrical shock & vibration req the use of personal protective equip & engineering controls to avoid injury.
Operating plant environ including working at heights on platforms & in confined spaces accessible only by ladder, in high & low ambient temperature areas, in high noise, & low light areas while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
Standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long period of time.
Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to climb stairs, ladders, and work at heights on elevated platforms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, operate devices, tools, or controls, & reach w/ hands & arms.
Must be willing to tolerate awkward and stretched positions while stooping, crouching, or kneeling.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Noise levels are moderately loud and may vary in various areas of the plant site. Must be able to work around high voltage.
Must have manual dexterity and ability to efficiently manipulate keyboards. Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments.
