Nurse Practitioner Pediatric

Summary:

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Nurse Practitioner (NP) will report to the Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and be responsible for overseeing the progress of a specific caseload of patients in the PICU. The NP may also act as an educator consultant and liaison to healthcare providers caring for the patients across the care continuum.

Demonstrates a fundamental grounding in nursing theory and practice with mastery of knowledge of pediatrics.

Manages a caseload of patients in partnership with the PICU attending resident and nursing team to optimize safe delivery of care as well as timely completion of required tests and procedures.

Works collaboratively with pediatric and emergency medicine residents nursing respiratory therapy pharmacy nutrition social work and case management as well as specialty consultants to optimize patient care and patient satisfaction.

Job Duties

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

* Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations

* Evaluates and treats on the basis of history physical examination radiological laboratory and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline

* Performs indicated procedures in accordance with procedural privileges skill and proficiency as approved by the Division Director

* Initiates referrals to other health care providers and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician

* Documents and bills for direct care provided

* Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice

* Incorporates health promotion health protection and injury prevention measures into the plan of care within the context of the complex acute critical and chronic illness

* Facilitates the patient's transitions between and within health care settings

* Prescriptive privileges per licensure

* Performs and participates in interprofessional education activities quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research including program development under the supervision and guidance of the Medical Director

* Provides educational and training opportunities for medical students residents and other APP/PA/NP students as appropriate

* Participates in and supports accreditation compliance and regulatory activities of the organization

* Participates in the development validation implementation and evaluation of standards policies procedures and clinical pathways to support the delivery of safe pediatric intensive care

* Consistently works to eliminate communication barriers participating as a key member of an interdisciplinary team

* Participates in the education of patient family and caregivers regarding any procedures post procedural care and expected outcomes and progress

* Annually completes mandatory safety infection control; maintains current BLS and PALS certifications

The schedule will be one day per week (10 hours) on Wednesdays from 7a-5p.

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE

* Masters of Science Degree Graduate of accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Specialty certification required.

* Baccalaureate in Nursing

* Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

* Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to pediatric patients with consideration of human development stages and cultural patterns across the spectrum of pediatric health and disease.

EXPERIENCE

Two years related experience as RN in critical care hospital setting and preferred 1-2 years experience as a nurse practitioner. Preference for peri-procedural emergency or critical care areas; preference for pediatric experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.
