Job Description

The Advanced Undersea Systems and Technology Group is seeking a scientist or engineer to contribute to the development of novel sensing concepts and architectures with application to the undersea domain. The group welcomes applicants with a background in one or more of the following technical disciplines: physics (applied or theoretical), oceanography, ocean engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science or data science. Experience prototyping hardware and designing/executing experiments is a plus. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to identify limitations and technology gaps in undersea mission areas, assess concepts, develop software, prototype hardware, analyze data from fielded systems, and evaluate potential missions for crewed and uncrewed platforms. Ability to clearly communicate results to diverse audiences, peers, sponsors and non-technical teams is required.

Requirements:

  • PhD in physics, ocean sciences, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, computer science or related technical field. In lieu of a PhD, applicants with an MS and 3 to 5 years of experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to communicate with and present to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to program in MATLAB and Python

Preferred Skills:

  • Field test experience, especially at-sea
  • Experience with autonomous underwater vehicles
  • Broad understanding of fundamental physical principles
  • Focused understanding of physical interactions between the ocean and atmosphere
  • Experience analyzing remote sensing data, especially satellite EO/IR or radar imagery
  • Experience manipulating large data sets
  • Computational modeling
  • Experience with parallel computing and high-performance computing (HPC) systems
