Job Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Recreation Supervisor - Adaptive Athletics, a Resource Team Member is responsible for assisting with event day management and facilitation of the school-based athletic competitions which are held during the school day.

Position Summary

  • Serve as an event day facilitator for the MPS Adaptive Athletics program
  • Assist with set-up and take-down of school-based athletic events which includes coordinating/moving equipment, assembling sports stations, taping lines on a court, etc.
  • Orient, supervise, and guide MPS student volunteers assisting at each sporting event
  • Assist in monitoring athletic competitions and collecting post-competition score sheets and reports
  • Assist with the training of school coaches and their student athletes
  • Engage in positive interactions with program and building staff, parents and community members
  • Engage in positive interactions with MPS teachers, educational assistants, handicap children's assistants and other MPS personnel in an effort to promote a team approach to helping students succeed
Supervision Required

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of Adaptive Athletics program.

Job Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • able to meet the scheduling needs for this position
  • access to reliable transportation
Preferred Experience

  • Retired Milwaukee Public Schools - Physical Education Teacher (preferred)
  • Work experience/volunteer with special education students
  • Active or prior involvement with Special Olympics
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to lift and move sports equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with special education students ages 6-21 years old
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working with fellow program staff, building staff and high school age volunteer staff
  • Exhibit verbal and written skills
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining composure and professionalism under pressure
  • Ability to lead by example and work under very little supervision
Working Environment

  • Tentative work schedule, event days from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm
  • 99% of competitions are held indoors in MPS schools

Work with a team of recreation leaders which varies from 6-14 employees
