The Position

We are seeking compassionate, detail-oriented individuals to join our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program as tax preparation volunteers. VITA is a nationwide initiative providing complimentary tax services to eligible low-to-moderate income families. All volunteers undergo comprehensive tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards, including instruction on maintaining taxpayer privacy and confidentiality.

What You Will Do

  1. Prepare and file state and federal tax returns using professional tax software.
  2. Complete required tax law training and obtain necessary certifications, either through online self-study or in-person sessions.
  3. Deliver exceptional customer service by offering friendly support, addressing inquiries, and collaborating with other volunteers when needed.
  4. Work collaboratively with staff and fellow volunteers in a team-oriented environment.
  5. Strictly adhere to all confidentiality policies and procedures.
  6. Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the VITA program's mission.

The Successful Candidate Must Have

  1. Minimum age of 18 years.
  2. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational background.
  3. Availability to volunteer during tax season (January through April) for a minimum of 2 hours per week (up to 24 hours maximum).
  4. Must complete IRS self-study training or attend in-person trainings in December/January.
  5. Must pass online IRS exams:
    • IRS Volunteer Standards of Conduct Exam
    • Intake/Interview and Quality Review Exam
    • Basic or Advanced Tax Preparer Exam
  6. Intermediate computer skills and ability to navigate tax preparation software.
  7. Enthusiasm for learning Federal and New Jersey Income Tax form completion.
  8. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  9. Excellent interpersonal skills with a patient and supportive demeanor when interacting with the public.
