Short Description

The Histotechnician performs duties in the histology laboratory according to accepted practices; prepares tissue specimens for routine and special processing; selects correct protocol based on physician orders.

Prepares thin slices of human tissue on slides for analysis by examining, fixing, and processing the tissue for proper sample preservation; surrounding the tissue with paraffin wax in a process called embedding; cutting a tissue sample with a microtome or cryostat; mounting the tissue sample on a slide; staining or dying the sample to emphasize abnormalities.

Prepares/organizes slides for pathologist's review. Handles requests for additional slides/stains submitted by the pathologists.

Assists the manager with inventory tracking. May file slides and blocks or retrieve same as needed.

MOHS laboratory: Performs frozen section processing for Mohs micrographic surgery - cuts tissue in ultra-thin sections modifying technique based on tissue type.

Trains and/or supervises students as well as new & existing employees. Properly documents training. Develops and performs employee competency assessments.

Demonstrates excellent customer service skills; effectively communicates with personnel within the laboratory and throughout health system as appropriate; handles inquiries expeditiously.

Maintains knowledge of and follows all hospital policies and procedures as well as laboratory general and department specific policies and procedures.


Experience Required

2 years experience preferred


Education Requirements

High School Diploma

Associate degree Preferred

Completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology programmed preferred.
