Rail Engineer - Junior Level

We are actively looking for a Junior level Rail Engineer to join our corporate transportation team. As part of the corporate transportation group this position will provide track design engineering support for the Freight & Economic Development team's rail clients. They will oversee and implement conceptual planning of rail facilities and track connections for new and expanding rail users. This role will promote rail-inclusive development planning for industrial sites and parks accessible by the serving railroad and analyze industrial property and articulates technical development and design challenges to project stakeholders.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist and supports designs construction projects by studying project concept, architectural drawings, and models
  • Assist the preparation of engineering design by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photographs, and tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and related topographical and geologic data
  • Produces rail design project tasks including geometric design, civil and drainage design
  • Collects field data, documenting and reporting field conditions and findings
  • Produces 2D concept plans and schematics and confidently communicates rail design options to the project team
  • Produces 3D rail designs using Civil3D or OpenRail to verify project requirements are met and project is viable
  • Supports the analysis of project costs by calculating labor, material, and related costs
  • Creates feasibility study by analyzing engineering design, reviewing environmental impact studies, and assembling data
  • Assist in the production of engineering documents by developing construction specifications, plans, and schedules
  • Confirms adherence to construction specifications and safety standards by monitoring project progress and verifying calculations and placements
  • Researches and assists in complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; required
    • Master's degree; preferred
  • 1-2+ years of experience of transportation/transit planning and environmental documentation; required
  • EIT or PE license; preferred
  • MicroStation / Geopak or AutoCAD / Civil 3D design software experience; required
  • Experience with Class 1 railroads, commuter and transit agencies, AREMA, CPUC, FRA, and FTA design standards, manuals, requirements; preferred
  • Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working conditions:

Majority of work if field based, which may necessitate climbing, navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Field work includes exposure to extreme heat, cold or inclement weather. Ability to use standard office equipment.
