Distinguished Professor

The UNC-CH Department of Mathematics invites applications for a tenured Distinguished Professor position effective July 1, 2025. The search is in the field of Analysis, broadly interpreted and including harmonic analysis, the analysis of partial differential equations, dynamical systems, geometric analysis, etc.

The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to extend the frontiers of mathematical knowledge and the ways it is used in the real world, to disseminate that knowledge and train the next generation of teachers and researchers, as well as those choosing careers with industry or government. The Department is committed to building and nourishing interaction with other units across campus using mathematics, institutes and industries in the research triangle, across the state and the nation. The Department maintains a strong research program as well as a comprehensive educational program. An active, healthy research environment is essential for the training of graduate students and enlivens the teaching of undergraduate courses, bringing students into contact with new and relevant mathematics and creating a population with the necessary mathematical skills and appreciation, encouraging some to join the next generation of researchers and educators. This Distinguished Professor position will include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, academic service, supervising graduate students, and continued strong and independent research.

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. The candidate must have scholarly achievement appropriate for a tenured appointment at the level of full professor.

Academic experience appropriate for an appointment at the level of full professor, evidence of outstanding research and dedication to excellent teaching are expected.

At least one of the potential reviewers needs to be able to speak to the candidate's teaching and service. The other four reviewers should hold appointments at the level of full professor or higher and be independent of the candidate. These reviewers should not be directly involved with the candidate as, e.g., a collaborator, mentor, previous co-worker, former or current class co-teacher, former dissertation chair, etc.
