Open-rank tenure track position in Art History and Visual Culture (19th-21st century in a Global Context)

The Department of Art History and Visual Culture at Denison University invites applications for an open rank tenure track position in the scholarly area of late 19th to 21st century art history and visual culture in a global context. Our new colleague's expertise should include at least two of the following regions distributed across the Global North and South: Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, North America. Candidates must be able to teach a range of different topics in late 19th to 21st century art and visual culture from more than one regional perspective. Strong candidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level, an appreciation of the context of a small residential liberal arts institution, and a clear and active research agenda. Appointment at the assistant or associate professor level will be based on experience in academia.

A strong potential for excellence demonstrated by teaching experience and a productive research program are essential. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and advanced courses reflecting both the candidate's expertise and the needs of the department. The candidate's course offerings will include AHVC 111, an introductory course on artists and movements from the late 19th to the 21st century. The teaching load is 5 courses per year. Denison is a fully residential campus and all classes are held in person and on campus. The successful candidate will be innovative in their pedagogical approach to teaching all liberal arts students the tools necessary to critically analyze art and visual culture.

We seek a new colleague who will be interested in teaching students how to use diverse writing genres to address different audiences and will seek to integrate the Columbus art world with their teaching to bolster opportunities for learning and practice during the semester. The department is especially interested in developing capabilities in teaching new media and/or photography in the areas defined above, but candidates in all subjects of specialization are welcome to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a robust, ongoing research program, and contribute actively to the continued growth of the department and the college.

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant specialization in art history and visual culture by August 2025 (ABD will be considered Instructor until Ph.D. is obtained). College-level teaching experience beyond Teaching or Course Assistant positions is required.
