GRANTS AND CONTRACTS PROFESSIONAL 2 or 3, DOQ- G&C Pre-Award

About the Job:
The Department of Surgery Grants & Contracts (SGC) team has an exciting opportunity to manage an independent workload of proposal submissions in an environment of continuous
improvement to provide exceptional grant preparation assistance to busy clinical and research faculty.

This hybrid position will primarily work independently with day-to-day activities; and report to the Grants & Contracts Manager. The successful candidate will be expected to be in the office 2
days per week during the 6-month probationary period and a minimum of 1 day per week after passing probation. The successful candidate will receive training and be part of a collaborative team who helps facilitate proposal submission up to the point an award is made. This position reports to the SGC Manager.

TYPICAL TASKS (These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class.)

Proposal Preparation and Award Management (80%)

  • Manage the proposal preparation from initial development through point of award for an assigned group of investigators on a wide variety of funding mechanisms that include
    R-series, training grants, career development awards, program/project, center-type, internal UMN funding, foundations, and State of Minnesota grants.
  • Read and interpret Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFOS), explain eligibility, budget limitations, and other award restrictions
  • Develop budgets for sponsored projects in collaboration with the principal investigator(s), Surgery Clinical Trials Office, accounting personnel, and others while ensuring the proposal contains appropriate effort and other resources
  • Communicate and document sponsor and University restrictions regarding PI/staff eligibility, cost sharing, F&A sharing, sponsor restrictions, and award terms.
  • Assist with new departmental research initiatives as they are developed.

Compliance and Administration (15%)

  • Contribute to team meeting agendas regarding current issues, policy updates, workload,
    tool development, etc. and take notes at meetings.
  • Collaborate with other SGC team members to ensure seamless service delivery of
    proposals
  • Share knowledge and interpretation of issues relevant to proposals and awards
  • Monitor both sponsor pre-award compliance (FCOI, RCR, sponsors' public access policies, use of human subjects or vertebrate animals, etc.) and University pre-award compliance across the Department of Surgery (DOS)
  • Provide training for DOS faculty and staff and serve as a resource for and train junior
    grant coordinators
  • Review and provide suggestions for process improvement and tool development

Development and Planning (5%)

  • Participate in meetings regarding current issues, policy updates, workload processes,
    and future tool development.
  • Complete other projects as assigned by Grants & Contracts Manager to improve work
    processes.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials

Qualifications for GCP 2:

  • BA or BS with at least 2 years of pre-award experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 6 years.

Qualifications for GCP 3:

  • BA or BS with at least 4 years of pre-award experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 8 years.
  • A GCP 3 will be expected to have more experience, require less training to get started, work more independently, and be able to manage a larger workload.

For both GCP 2 & 3:

  • Related experience can include assisting with budget and contract preparation as well as experience with NIH award management, business and Industry award management or clinical trials management.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects with fixed deadlines and ability to re-prioritize tasks as needed to successfully meet all deadlines
  • Demonstrated effective problem identification and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently under general supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex Research Administration problems independently
  • In addition, this position requires demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a higher education institution
  • Experience in pre- award management
  • Experience with electronic proposal submission systems such as Grants.gov, ASSIST
    databases (e.g., NIH RePORTER) and funding opportunity databases (e.g., Pivot) or University of Minnesota financial systems
  • Experience with preparing proposals from various sponsors, especially NIH and DOD

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary range for a GCP2 is $58,772.409 - $64,000. The salary range for a GCP 3 is 68,420.49 -74,000, but offers will depend on experience.

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
