The Patient Account Specialist requires expertise and knowledge of all aspects of medical insurance billing and patient accounting. The position completes daily charge and payment entries in the patient billing software system. This position assists with implementing policies and procedures related to the revenue cycle to ensure the quality of billing functions and systems to optimize reimbursement and cash flow.
Minimum Education and Experience

- High school diploma/GED

- Two years' experience with healthcare claims.

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration or related field preferred
  • Two years experience with healthcare claims
  • Strong personal computer literacy required including working knowledge of relevant software packages such as Microsoft Excel and Word. Familiarity and experience with practice management and patient accounting systems such as eClinicalworks preferred
  • Ability to work with large amounts of data, including checks for integrity, summation, and effective communication with internal and external constituents
  • Organized and effective at dealing with many activities simultaneously; strong planning and organizing skills required.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrates the highest degree of accuracy and readability for all work and team projects
  • Uses protects, and discloses patients' protected health information (PHI)only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Post charges and payments received at the facility to patient's account; process refunds to patients and/or insurance companies as needed
  • Process hearing aid returns as needed
  • Provides ongoing detailed assessments of insurance payer trends, providing solutions for credentialing, rejected and denied claims.
  • Assist with contacting third-party billing staff to insure accurate patient billing, collections, and reporting.
  • Assist with notifying third-party billing company of noticeable contractual provisions not adhered to; established fee schedules, denials duplicate payments.
  • Assists with maintaining schedules for all insurance carriers and third-party payers.
  • Research and notify the patient of EOB-Explanation of Benefits, working with the patient to answer billing questions and to resolve outstanding balances by collecting payments via phone; may involve complex research
  • Contact patients to discuss payment options and payment agreements as needed
  • Monitor and provide to staff 2 days prior to scheduled visit, patients' outstanding balance.
  • Assists in the development of training programs for departments to increase knowledge of the relationship between charge behavior, billing, and reimbursement.
  • Assist with creating training material for staff to know how to use how to use the third-party billing software and methods to reduce errors that impact reimbursement.
  • Communicate with third-party biller regarding patient accounts
  • Serve as backup to the Clinical Practice Manager and Front Desk Patient Care Coordinator.
