Job Summary
We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant I to join Dr. Benedict Kolber's team (www.kolberlab.com). This individual will support and contribute to NIH-funded research projects focused on developing novel analgesic drugs. This role will provide technical assistance for various research projects and conduct research activities according to research protocol. Research activities may include some or all of the following: patient recruiting and screening, traditional laboratory experiments & activities, informatics, and/or animal laboratory work.

This position blends administrative and research responsibilities, requiring effective communication, reliable organizational skills, and attention to detail. Qualified candidates will demonstrate initiative and adaptability in both independent and collaborative work.
Research experience in a laboratory setting is required. Assignments and work evaluation will be received from the professor/grant administrator (Principal Investigator), Dr. Benedict Kolber.
*This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week between the hours of 9 AM-5 PM Mon-Fri, although intermittent weekend work may be required (substituted for weekday hours).
This is an NIH grant-funded position, and continued employment is contingent on the availability of funds.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience in customer service or in daily interactions in a public services environment.

    • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques
    • Knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals and materials
    • Knowledge of computer applications used to record, analyze, and report findings.




Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Purchasing: including budget tracking, ordering, inventory, and product research; utilizing Quartzy online system for ordering and inventory management

  • Assistance with transgenic mouse colony, including breeding, genotyping, record maintenance, training new animal users, ensuring PHS and university policy compliance; this position is the first point of contact for emergent animal issues

  • Training and overseeing work study students, undergraduate lab members, and junior technicians; this includes developing training protocols, delegating duties, and reviewing member performance

  • Presenting work and assisting others with publications, presentations, grants, and other works

  • Ensuring safety compliance both in record-keeping and daily activities, in coordination with university safety personnel; collaborating to implement corrective action and training to resolve violations
  • Providing scheduling and administrative support to PI, staff, and students (e.g., recording meetings, ensuring consistent communication among lab members and external collaborators, overseeing shared equipment use)

  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the lab space, whether directly or by delegation

  • Completing experiments involving both in vitro and in vivo techniques related to testing of novel analgesic agents
  • Providing a point of contact second to PI in case of emergencies (e.g. staff issues, equipment malfunction)
  • Duties will change depending on the research advancements and personnel

  • Ability to follow experimental procedures and to report results accurately
  • Ability to keep an inventory of materials and equipment, requisition supplies and maintain purchasing documentation
  • Ability to use laboratory materials and equipment properly to assure the validity of results and preserve a safe working environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students
