Job Summary
Position Description
The Department of Sustainable Earth Systems Sciences ( SESS) in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics ( NSM) at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) is searching to fill two (2) open-rank tenure system faculty positions in the focus areas of: (1) Geophysics - Subsurface Imaging and Inversion, and (2) Hydrogeology - Environmental Earth Science, to support our research and teaching programs in Sustainable Earth Systems Sciences. Sustainable Earth Systems Sciences includes all aspects of the complex dynamic interactions between the geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere, with an emphasis on sustainable processes and practices.
The Geophysics - Subsurface Imaging and Inversion position requires leading expertise in advanced subsurface imaging, inversion and quantitative interpretation of the crust and lithosphere below the near-surface critical zone, and above the crust-mantle Moho boundary, in order to explore and understand deep tectonic and geologic structures, and their controls on the spatial distribution and exploration for earth resources such as aquifer water, geothermal and hydrocarbon energy, CO2 and hydrogen storage, and strategic critical mineral deposits required to support the emerging clean energy economy (copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, rare earth elements etc.). A research program is preferred that combines both fundamental science (National Science Foundation, etc.), in addition to applied science earth resource exploration (Department of Energy, etc.). The successful candidate will play a significant role in our new undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in Geophysics.
The Hydrogeology - Environmental Earth Science position requires leading expertise in surface and groundwater fluid flow, contaminant flow and monitoring, computational modeling, aqueous geochemistry, field experiment hydrogeology, and related environmental earth science and climate science aspects. A research program is preferred that combines both fundamental science (National Science Foundation, etc.) and applied science water resource analysis (Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, etc.). The successful candidate will play a significant role in our new undergraduate certificate program in Sustainable Earth & Environment.
The successful candidates will be expected to develop an internationally recognized research program supported by external research funding. Opportunities exist to collaborate and enhance our current SESS strengths in geophysics, geology, energy, environment, water, and climate; all attractive areas for government and industry research funding and future student employment opportunities. Teaching responsibilities will include both undergraduate and advanced graduate level courses in these focus areas. A demonstrated ability to integrate a broad range of innovative geophysical, hydrological, and geological methods for research and teaching is preferred, including quantitative field or laboratory measurements, surface and subsurface investigations, and modern theoretical, computational, or data analysis approaches.
The appointments commence for the fall 2025 semester.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD or equivalent in Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Earth Sciences or a related discipline is required prior to employment. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred Education and Experience: Appointments may be at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, or in exceptional cases, Full Professor. Preference will be given to candidates applying at the Associate or Full Professor rank. The appointees must have a relevant PhD degree and the demonstrated potential to achieve (at the Assistant level) or have achieved (at the Associate and Full Professor levels), a significant record of research, external grant funding, and scholarly publication in top-tier refereed journals.
