The primary function of the Manager of Patient & Workplace Safety is to help maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors of the hospital. This individual provides safety support for hospital leadership and staff, safety related training, education and coaching for milieu specialists, and unit staff, and routinely monitors and assesses competencies of milieu specialist & unit staff related to effective milieu management, and verbal de-escalation and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) techniques. The Manager of Patient & Workplace Safety also plays a key role in conducting environmental safety rounds, emergency situation drills ("codes"), and providing real-time training that enables facility leaders to develop and effectively execute milieu management safety plans. The Patient & Workplace Safety Manager routinely participates in facility and program staff meetings/huddles to report out patient & workplace safety updates or concerns. The Patient & Workplace Safety Manager serves as the facility's Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) coordination leader and Relay asynchronous communication devices administrator. Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm Job Duties & Responsibilities:

In conjunction with System leadership, conduct systematic needs assessments throughout the organization related to personal safety of patients as well as environmental safety in both clinical and non-clinical environments.

Conduct facility surveillance rounds with leadership to make assessments and develop training and supervision models to ensure patient safety and audit outcomes.

Conduct daily/weekly environmental safety risk rounds.

Check/verify Milieu Specialists' daily assigned tasks and provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and monitoring, as needed

Conduct monthly/quarterly Milieu Specialist competency assessments and maintain documentation of such.

Round on new employees to assess knowledge/understanding of q15-minute rounds, environmental rounds, assigned 1:1s, milieu management, patient engagement, NCI techniques, reporting out of safety concerns.

Assist units in conducting staff debriefings after code greens are call and documentation of debriefings.

In conjunction with leadership, create and implement a physical environment plan that assures patient safety.

Provide 'train the trainer' for select staff to expand training resources.

Maintain schedules and time for assigned Milieu Specialist(s).

Conduct video review of restraints and seclusions audits and retraining/education in real-time when necessary.

Partner with approved third-party consultants related to hospital training programs.

Collaborate with facility clinical team to address individual patients who present high patient safety risk factors at admission and implement safety and mitigation plans.

In conjunction with leadership, observe and evaluate the progress of trainees, providing mentoring, supervision, counseling, and planning for individual trainee improvement.

Demonstrate understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and Joint Commission standards.

  • Participate in services, seminars, and other meetings to increase involvement and awareness of regulations and standards.
  • Involve self in the education of other disciplines regarding the departmental-specific rules/regulations.

Participate in the quality assessment and performance improvement program.

  • Gain understanding of the quality assessment and performance improvement process.
  • Apply the quality assessment and performance improvement model to your department's activities.
  • Participate and/or create quality assessment and performance improvement teams that lead to enhancements in other hospital areas.
  • Educate and involve self in hospital and departmental performance improvement plans.

Communicate patient and workplace safety initiatives and expectations to Milieu Specialists, ensuring accountability, follow through, and periodic follow up when necessary.

Collaborate with other areas of the organization to support safety efforts of patients, employees, and environment at all levels of care, including but not limited to, nursing, nurse educators, operations, human resources, data analytics, quality improvement, compliance, etc.

Allocate resources effectively to support safety initiatives and programs.

Ensure cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high safety standards and adhering to industry best practices.

Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Promote a team atmosphere by treating individuals with respect and honesty and by using direct communication and active listening skills.

Additional Job Description:

Education/Training Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, nursing, healthcare-related field required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' progressive people and healthcare facility leadership experience required.
  • One to three years' healthcare experience in patient safety, risk, and/or quality required. Healthcare experience should be recent and within a clinical setting.
  • Certified Instructor for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within six (6) months from the date of hire required. Maintenance of certification in good standing required indefinitely.
  • Proficiency utilizing electronic health record (EHR) software (e.g., Cerner, Epic, etc.).
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Products.
  • Valid driver license. Must be granted insurable status by the Rogers Memorial Hospital insurance policy.
