This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of specialists, engineers, and designers, you will support systems engineering for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of the development of the next lunar landers. As a crew and life support systems Safety and Reliability Systems Engineer you will be expected to lead and support various roles including functional decomposition, and safety and reliability analysis, requirements management and decomposition, integration, verification and validation. Your attention to detail will be used for managing safety requirements development drive design maturation.

Additionally, this role requires understanding and supporting requirements analysis and traceability, functional analysis, systems analysis, safety analysis, technical performance monitoring, developing strategies and approaches for specialty engineering (operability, reliability, maintainability, supportability) and system product life cycle processes. You will also support the alignment and consistent implementation of SLD Vehicle system safety engineering practices for system to lower-level program tiers as well as across program systems. You will also help develop health metrics to support insight into program health and tracking to major objectives. You will also participate in gated reviews. You should be able to understand and document system behaviors with architecture.

You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing Blue Moon Lunar Lander (Link: https://www.blueorigin.com/blue-moon) that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Experience with safety requirements development and verification/validation.
  • Software system safety methods are understood with experience establishing controls for hazards.
  • Support and assist in project management and a major system safety project, meetings, technical work, and reviews.
  • Knowledge of LEAN principles and application to system safety analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or related field.
  • 4+ years of Systems Engineering experience performing activities such as requirements definition, requirements traceability, functional decomposition, integration, verification, and validation.
  • Experience with performing safety analyses on space systems including one of the following: Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs), Hazard Reports, Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), reliability analysis, and mitigation plans.
  • Possess skills in strategic system thinking, excellent written and oral communication skills, proactive in moving program forward through team collaborations to achieve timely decisions, ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive culture.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Participates in systems engineering and system safety analysis activities with minimal oversite.
  • Takes ownership of individual product development with minimal oversight.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in one subject area (or several areas) used to design, develop, and evaluate sub-systems such as Guidance, Navigation, and Control, Command and Data Handling, Communications, Environmental Control and Life Support Systems, Electrical Power Systems, Propulsion and Fluid Systems, Software, Structures & Mechanisms, Thermal, and Fuel Cells.
  • 2 years of experience in system safety and reliability not limited to FHAs/PHAs, FMEA/FMECAs, and FTAs.
  • System safety analysis/modeling and reliability & fault tolerance plan development.
  • System development/integration experience, preferably with aerospace hardware.
  • Knowledge of current systems engineering and integration tools and methodologies.
  • Experience with systems engineering tools such as JAMA and Cameo.
  • Experience in reliability, maintainability and operability analysis and execution.
  • Experience identifying and analyzing system safety risks.

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $110,055.00-$154,077.00;WA applicants is $120,060.00-$168,084.00
